Generally speaking, I'm beginning to think that more shows should have fewer seasons, going only as long as it makes sense. It's also okay for a show to be a miniseries. I just wish more shows were braver and chose creativity and strong plotlines over dragging themselves out to eight or nine seasons when half the fans gave up after six.

Whole heartedly agree. There's little reason, creatively, for any go past five seasons and I'd say for most shows two seasons suffices.

AYRT - Oh, definitely. Some would even work just fine as one season. Especially if the show takes place at a school - either have the kids start off as ninth graders, have the seasons cover a semester if they're in college (though admittedly that could be harder to pull off if their aging was obvious), or just end it when they graduate. Otherwise you lose the entire purpose of the show.

YES, this. I'd probably be way more invested in tv shows if they were shorter - plot compacted - and not endless episodic case episodes. This is why I don't watch tv that much.

I want something shorter and plotty, something different than the same mainstream cop/doctor/lawyer.

while this makes sense to us, it clashes with what networks want which is steady ratings and cutting costs at every corner. they'd rather run a longstanding, popular series into the ground than end it "too soon" and face the risks/costs of starting something new.

AYRT - I think you're right, and I can even sort of understand that. We're thinking creatively, they're thinking financially. I think, personally, if they allowed more creativity (and diversity) it would help, but that's not how they look at it.

You know, the more people say this, the more I think it's true...I don't watch much TV but as much as I like the thing I like to continue, it sucks when they continue and then start being bad.

Same. I prefer around 3 seasons. Maybe 4 if it's really good but after that I will lose interest because it won't end D:

Yeah, I think I feel the same these days. I know while I'm watching a show I love I wont want it to end because I'm enjoying it so much, but having had some shows go to shit after 5 seasons I really think stopping there and capping everything off nicely would work better.

This is honestly why I've switched to watching British/Asian TV series and anime. They're far more likely to be self-contained and have a defined story arc that ends within a couple of seasons.

Agree. Many series would be better severed by a 6 or 13 episode season rather than trying to drag it out for a full year.
