I think that with the way media is created this kind of thing is completely justified.

Nowadays many fandoms are created by different writers, and as a result of this the characterization can be inconsistent. And that's when executive meddling doesn't force the writers to do something completely OOC and that goes against the writer's original vision.

Media is not tied to a external reality - these days it's not even tied to the writer's vision, for the reasons mentioned above. So why not give up on canon purism and embrace whatever interpretation of the characters makes sense to you?

You can headcanon whatever interpretation you want, but it's still not actually canon. The creators don't have to acknowledge it, the rest of the fandom doesn't have to agree, and the people you're discussing an installment with aren't actually evil meaniepantses if they stare at you like you've grown a third head when you start spouting off about your pet theory like it's something that actually appeared in text.

Which is what most of the people who pull this kind of shit don't seem to understand. Headcanon whatever the hell you like, but it doesn't erase or alter what actually happens in canon.
