why wouldn't you want to serve the person you love? i mean, it sounds bad when you say 'serve your man' because it sounds like there is some sort of power imbalance, but i think it's totally normal to want to serve your husband or wife, and your family in general.

it sounds like there is some sort of power imbalance

You sound like you need a nice lie down.

They are still right. But how dare feminists be angry? Men might not like it, right? So strident and unfeminine.

I do nice things for my family. I don't "serve" them, because that implies a power imbalance right there, and we're equals. When they do nice things for me, they're not "serving" me, either.

hmmmm...i don't really agree. but i think this is more an issue of semantics.

It's the connotation of the word that sets peoples' teeth on edge. Think of a server at a restaurant. They're not there to be your pal or because they like you so much that they're just dying for a chance to bring your food and refill your drinks on command. They're there because it's their job and your position is superior to theirs in the sense that if you complain, they're likely to get in trouble. The customer has more power over the waitstaff.

That's not how it works in my family, so that's why nobody is "serving" anyone.

i get your point, and i agree that in reality power imbalances do exist in those situations. i just don't think that they always exist, or have to exist at all. i do consider myself a servant of my family. if it came down to it, i would do anything for them and it has nothing to do with power, equal or otherwise. there are things that i do for my family members that are purely out of duty, out of loyalty, and thus i consider it service. it's not like i wait on them hand and foot, and i don't think that a loving wife or husband does that for their spouse. you cook dinner for your children, and this is service. it's love and devotion. that's what it means to me.

as i said, it's really an issue of semantics. i realize that when you hear the word 'serve' you're getting a totally different idea from it.

The question is, are you the only or main person in these relationships doing any serving? If so, maybe think why that might be.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
no, i'm not.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
DA

I would also do anything for the people I love. Anything at all. And I know they'd do the same for me.

None of us would ever call that act "service." You "serve" someone who is in a greater position of power than you. That's the semantics of it. Servitude does not mean an equal relationship in any shape or form.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
But service is not synonymous with servitude. Look it up.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Semantics is about meaning and context. It's not the meaningless word game you seem to believe it is. Service, especially in this context, DOES imply inequality and that's what grates.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
i don't believe it IS, in this context.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
In the context of her interview? It really is.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
i don't interpret it that way, sorry.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
But that doesn't mean it isn't that way.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
no, it means that you and i interpret it differently, and given that neither you or i know the person who was interviewed, i don't think either of us are fully qualified to understand what she meant. i have my own opinion, and you may have yours.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
There's interpretation, and a willful ignorance of the actual definitions of the word.
