The Shire is, basically, an intensely idealized fantasia of rural England, in a very old merrie-olde-England way, so it's not surprising that it would seem like a really nice place to live! I would want to live there too. But in a lot of ways the whole concept of the Shire is that it's an ideal place to live.

Image: a landscape photograph of the front door of Bag End and a sweeping view of the Shire.

When people ask me what fictional world I’d like to live in, my answer is Middle Earth.

Not for the magic, the adventures, the fights. Not for the elves or kingdoms.

But because I would desperately like to live in the Shire.

So move to New Zealand.

New Zealand has the landscape but it doesn't necessarily have the, you know, curls of smoke rising slowly from the chimney of thatched houses, and old manors where eccentric old squires live, and going mushroom-gathering and then returning to the house for a great mushroom feed, and festivals on the village green, and generally the hallmarks of the Shire and the whole pastoral idyll thing.

Or the British countryside. There are still some Shire bits left.

New Zealand isn't the Shire, though.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
The shire is basically the West Country in England, of course all idealised, but if you lived in the Cotswolds you could get the feel of it, I know people who do and they love it.
It's like Narnia, CS Lewis adored the golden valley, Herefordshire and the Welsh Borders, he based his descriptions on that. The Golden Valley would also be somewhere you could live!

Actually, the Shire is Staffordshire and Shropshire. Tolkien's family lived here and we have a lot of places named after them. I pass a Tolkien Way and a Lorien Court every day on my way to work.

The Shire seems like a beautiful place, but I feel I would be incredibly out of place if I actually lived there.
Having said that, I would love to take a visit to the English countryside, and see how close to the Shire I could find it!

Well, it does seem like a nice place to live. I wouldn't mind it there either.

Who doesn't, OP? My sister once said "Fuck the Shire - I'd live with the elves!" and I almost went off, I'll tell you.

I'm not a big Tolkien person but by god I'd give a lot to have a hobbit's breakfasts.

I was born and grew up in The Shire - or at least, a few miles away from Sarehole. It is pretty: but the Black Country is closer than in LotR, and it's encroaching all the time.

The Shire is clearly the only reason to live in Middle Earth. Forget about questing and swords, get me one of those adorable little houses. Plus everything's green and pretty, you never have to wear shoes, and everyone eats fifty meals a day.
