This is what I was thinking though - the pink here is pretty clearly used to code for femininity (even though I strongly disagree with that, it is/was a common mechanic) and now I'm wondering if there were other different colors and what their contexts are. It doesn't appear to be just random, from the secret alone.

Were there any of the dogs on earth that fell outside of the natural color spectrum of dogs? I can't seem to recall any other then the angel, who doesn't really count since she's not of this world... (I feel like I could be wrong on this though)

I think some of the puppies in the "What's Mine Is Yours" number were also pink or purple.

Well dying/chalking some dogs is a popular trend. Pink poodles are most common.

The movie takes place in a mainly realistic setting other than the inclusion of talking, dancing dogs (and the supernatural elements, which are religion-derived anyway), so the pink, purple, green, and blue dogs stand out.

Except the part where the dogs can also run heavy machinery and build their own disco. And candycanes are apparently the stand in for cocaine, and there's a 50 foot long alligator... yeah it's got no other big breaks from reality.

I think angel is a...like mystical heaven dog. a litteral dog angel. so she gets to be pink.

OMG I used to love that movie so much when I was a kid. I was totally obsessed with it, it was so incredibly harrowing and dark and violent and id-tastic compared to most other kids' movies I was exposed to, that the whole thing was utterly enthralling and made a huge impression on me. I still have so much fondness for it.
