Eh, fiction and fanfic alike has always done this, and I wouldn't feel bad - everyone knows that's not realistic. Some of it is that it's a bit easier to write a 24 year old character who has a good job and makes enough money to do things essential to the plot than a 24 year old who works four part time jobs and can't even afford a piece of pizza. If it works for the plot, that's a different thing.

Also keep in mind a lot of fanfic is written by teenagers who have no idea how few 24 year olds really are that accomplished.

oh teenagers, who think you graduate from college and then automatically have all your shit together. They're so cute.

Hell, even college seniors at least hope that happens, though they know it didn't for their friends who graduated last year...

Yep.

OT

It makes me laugh yet feel slightly irate at descriptions of 24/25 year olds who still act like they're 14. (even if the writer wrote a disclaimer about not knowing how people at that age behave).

Granted, there are people who do behave that way. :/

Except that it's no less realistic to write a 24 year old character who has a good, well-paid job than a 24 year old character who works four part-time jobs and can't even afford a piece of pizza. There are 24 year olds who have their shit together. There are 24 year olds who don't. That's real life.
