Isn't that the plot of the last X-Men movie?

You can always take the pragmatic (albeit pessimistic) approach: no one accomplishes these sorts of things in real life and the authors are even more bitter about it than you to the point that they wrote up their own fantasies in an attempt to live vicariously through them and then published it all.

This is the truth. Don't compare yourself to fictional characters OP. Very few people are that awesome in real life.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Considering there ARE people who accomplishes those things in real life, wouldn't it be more pragmatic to say it's very rare? Self-deception only works for so long.

I love James McAvoy and I think he's the perfect young!Xavier, but WHY did they make him 24 when James looks so much older? That bugs the shit out of me...

(Anonymous) 2015-01-11 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, fiction and fanfic alike has always done this, and I wouldn't feel bad - everyone knows that's not realistic. Some of it is that it's a bit easier to write a 24 year old character who has a good job and makes enough money to do things essential to the plot than a 24 year old who works four part time jobs and can't even afford a piece of pizza. If it works for the plot, that's a different thing.

Also keep in mind a lot of fanfic is written by teenagers who have no idea how few 24 year olds really are that accomplished.

I usually assume most of the fic like this is written by teenagers.

Text: I really dislike fiction/fanfiction where the cahracters are so young yet have such amazing, mature, and accomplished lives. It just makes me feel bad about myself!!!

[different font] Hello, I’m AU Charles Xavier. I’m 24 years old, a tenured professor, world famous scientist, Nobel Prize winner, and everybody takes me seriously. I’m also happily married to this hot bloke named Erik and we have children and really hot sex all the time.

I can see why, and b the-at logic it should bother me, but it rarely does. I guess my mind sees that as just as fictional as the fact they're mutants.

don't encounter that in my fandom often, where most of them are shown as grown up fuck ups when aged up. makes me feel better.

Don't feel bad about yourself. Feel bad for the people who write such nonsense.

Comparing yourself to a fictional genius is a recipe for badness. Don't do it.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-11 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
It's wish-fulfilment fantasy though.

I think of it as playing Sims with all the cheats and hacks on -- you get to do much more stuff with the game much faster than if you slogged through jobs and earned money and skills and failed a lot, but there is no way it's relatable to reality in any way. If a character has buckets of money and free time, then (especially novice) writers think you can do a lot more interesting stuff with them without having to explain anything.

Some people move on from that and find they get more satisfaction from more relatable characters, and some people still enjoy the implausible fantasy. It's all good, as long as you remind yourself that it's in no way setting a stardard for reality.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-11 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
But that's just wish fulfillment fic written by people who feel exactly like you do, OP.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-11 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
This bothers me so much too. It also applies to charscters that ate very skilled at a lot of things.

That would bother me more specifically because of how unrealistic that is. Even the smartest, most capable people don't have time to do all of that by the time they hit 24. If someone somehow did it would be an extreme anomaly.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-11 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
He's a fucking psychic.

Are you telling me that if you had psychic powers from the age of ten, then by the age of 24 you'd be a pathetic waster schlubb with no prospects, no career, and living an empty live?

If I were a psychic, I would be living the life of a literal god.

It's probably pretty easy to get what you are wanting when you can read people's minds and even change them.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone on tv/in films is supposed to be ridiculously young though. And then played by an actor the wrong age. 20-30 is the default age for everyone unless it's a plot point.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I was surprised that Christian Grey from Fifty Shades of Grey is supposed to be 27 years old. So all these middle aged women are drooling over being dominated by a guy that's not even thirty yet?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
This thread is so weird. The thing most people are latching on to as being unrealistic is Professor X being wildly successful at 24, not Professor X BEING A MUTANT PSYCHIC who can manipulate people into doing anything he wants. Like someone said upthread, he's successful because he's a mutant. It's very, very, VERY rare for a normal human 24-year-old to do all of that, but someone who ISN'T a normal human and can manipulate people at will? Yeah, he'd probably have half a country eating out of his palm by that age.

"Realistic" is relative the rest of the world in the story.

One thing I liked about Batman Begins was that Bruce didn't become Batman until he was just shy of his 30th birthday and he had to work at it.

This bothers me a little too. It just makes me think of the start of From Eroica, With Love. (You know, before it became the Cold War comedy crackfest we all know and love.)

Which is why I decided to write a serial where the protagonist HAD to be older. The odds of him developing the backstory, skills, and challenges that from his main arc are just highly unlikely to happen before he's forty at least.

(To my surprise, it ended up the most popular thing I write. I guess people really like kinky old exorcists who fight vampire squash.)
