Unpopular opinion: I prefer the community-less nature of tumblr. On LJ I always felt more pressure to make friends and then when I didn't it felt worse. Much less pressure on tumblr.

I think this kind of opinion is fine. People want different things. What's funny to me is usually there are a lot of people complaining that "uuuugh Tumblr is so bad for fandom community" and then they don't do anything about it. There are certainly enough people doing the complaining that I wonder why more don't migrate back to DW.

I still can't figure out why people skipped right over DW and went from LJ to Tumblr, if that's the sort of platform they wanted.

Although in my case, it was a forced hand because that's where my fandom went, so it'd either be going over to DW on my own or sucking it up and going to Tumblr despite hating everything about it (chose the latter, didn't stay very long).

IIRC it was because Tumblr really came into being while DW was still somewhat in development. Then the end of 2011 happened, where LJ made its major layout change and subject lines were gone. The roleplay community mass-migrated to DW, but Tumblr had already cemented itself as the major fandom presence by then.

Huh. I'd barely even heard of Tumblr before mid/late 2011, and I already had a DW account for about two years by then.

But yes, it was after LJ's layout change -or more appropriately, after their attitude towards the layout change, and their general "don't give a fuck about you, fandom!" stance- that my fandom seemed to migrate entirely.
