Honestly, do you people not know how to use tumblr properly? I don't even have xkit; just with tumblr savior I've been browsing all my fandom tags without any problems whatsoever.

Sometimes this community reminds me of my dad. He's allergic to new technology and gives up after two seconds of using something, complaining about how annoying it is.

I wonder the same thing and I don't even use Tumblr savior. I have a list of tracked tags that I check once a day and that's it. If a particular user posts too much off-topic stuff in a tag, I just put them on ignore. That's it.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-11 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
And how you find something in particular?
Because browsing tags is easy and it's even easier to kill time like that, but that's it.

This. And 90% of stuff is gifs or two sentence episode reactions which is great if that's what you're looking for, but if not you're sol.

I think a lot of it depends on the fandom, though.

In my last fandom, one pairing was tagged at least four ways that I could remember. Some people used one tag more for fanwork, some people used another tag more for fic, some people used most of the tags to post hate and start drama. It was intensely frustrating trying to slog through all the different variations trying to find anything, TS and XKit or not.

Every time F!S discusses tumblr this is exactly what pops into my head. I've been using tumblr for a few years now, and have never had the sort of problems people always whine about here. Yeah discussion is a little screwy, but I see way more meta and discussion on my dash than I EVER did at any LJ community.

I remember how much people loathed LJ. Even before Strikethrough people were constantly talking about how shitty LJ was for fandom. And it really, really was.

It's not really a shock that F!S is so rabidly anti-tumblr, though, because F!S is one of the last LJ-style fandom comms in existence. It's only natural that a large portion of posters would be fans of this sort of platform. Everyone else in fandom moved on to other platforms years ago.

Not something I ever came across.

I think many of us aren't anti-tumblr, it's just... there's stuff that it's impossible in tumblr (mostly how hard is to have a discussion and the difficulty in finding something specific) and we wish it was better than that?

This. My big objection of Tumblr is the horrible user-interface - the fact that it's really hard to have coherent conversations and there's basically no concept of a central/original post that efficiently tracks the conversations that it's generated.

Meta in my fandom isn't as nearly as good and expansive on Tumblr as it was on LJ.

People didn't loathe LJ, they hated the changes being forced on them by a clueless company who wanted to make it a FB clone.

It's not really a shock that F!S is so rabidly anti-tumblr.

It's not Tumblr itself, it's the shitty people in my fandom over there. I'm glad they've moved on to other platforms.

It's really fandom-specific. There's a fandom I'm in where I don't encounter the problems people here talk about it, but there's another I'm in where I encounter them constantly.

I actually am your dad. I/We are sad about the discussion being "a little screwy" on tumblr. In our thirty five years as your dad, we have enjoyed the threaded comments (not really; we didn't have the threaded comments to begin with; we hollered back and forth across the playground and went to the library to do research for our essays, from THE ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITTANICA! and posted them by writing them with our fountain pens on paper) because they are awesome. I/We are happy that others are happy with the functionality of tumblr. It makes us yay. But I/we are also sad that things are changing. Also I/we do not like it when gmail changes the layout every five months to become inexplicably less user friendly and intuitive.

I think there is a lot of good reasons to hate tumblr every bit as much as LJ. People like you that always want to act like Tumblrs the besties for fandom! But what about the pages of SJW crap that gets past tumblr savior and xkit in tags, or how tumblrs been underhanded and filtered a lot of content out and made it unacceptable now (anything mature, some incest pairings, etc) or even deleted accounts because of it without warning, or how SJW or other tumblerina's get a hate boner hack people stuff and then start ruining your life or fandom stuff, and now a lot of popular people are scared to tag or say anything out of line that can be misconstrued by SJW's? Oh and that's all if you can get past all the fandom text post of "WAH~ THIS FAANDOM HURT MY FEEL FEELS AND NO ONE SHOULD LIKE IT BECAUSE I DON'T"

I'm sorry but I'll take limited, locked post any day before that hot mess called tumblr.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
You can see the mature posts and incest pairings by changing a setting. It's a little lock that shows up in the upper right hand of the screen when you're browsing tags. If you unlock it, you'll be able to see mature posts again.

Example: sometimes I like to search for "skullgirls" because I like the game and want to see some fanart/concept art that might be being posted around. Instead I get a lot of unrelated posts of women with skull tattoos or make up and I can't conceivably think up a way to block those out of what I'm searching for (because often they are tagged just "skullgirls" as well).

(And then, even if I do find fanart, there's a fairly decent chance of it being uncensored, fucked-silly porn that isn't what I was looking for. But that's more me missing the cut feature.)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on the people and the fandom and if they use tags properly- a major complaint, it seems like from many F/S posts, so, yeah, I can see it being a problem in some areas.

No problem with using tags in my fandom, but the shit was always the same. Nothing original, nothing inspired.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Tumblr savior is an add-on, anon. If to use a platform correctly, you have to download a fix for it made by someone else, then the platform is broken.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have tumblr savior and yet I never seem to encounter any of the problems that I see people complaining about here.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 01:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It's really great you haven't had those problems, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.
