I'm still active on LJ (hi!) and I lock posts that contain personally identifiable information. Those are restricted to a subset of close friends that I trust.

I don't lock any of my fannish stuff, though. Most of my stuff is public.

It's unlikely you'd even know I lock anything unless you happened to checked my profile, spotted that I'd last updated on {date} and realized you can't see anything posted on {date}.

I also know other people who occasionally use LJ as a personal diary. Unsurprisingly, they mark their personal-diary posts as Private.
