Honestly the only improvement is the lack of f-locking. Why the hell did people ever do that.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-11 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Because there has been more than one wave of purges on LJ because someone that wasn't even friended to an account got upset over something they found offensive. Imagine having your whole account deleted without so much as a by-your-leave because you posted a drawing of a fictional character that looked like they might be underage unclothed or even engaged in some sexual act.

A DRAWING of a FICTIONAL CHARACTER that MIGHT BE underage.

And yet the supernatural kink meme still exists

This!

I run a fic exchange comm and I seem to spend my entire life checking that prospective members have an age statement before I approve their request to join. That way, in theory, by f-locking R and above-rated stories, I'm not allowing underage readers to read our members' adult fics and, with a bit of luck, I'm protecting our archive from future purging.

there's password accounts on tumblr, so i'm not sure how it's all that different

(Anonymous) 2015-01-11 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I've almost never run into that.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-11 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
they're fairly common, but you're way less likely to run into them because of how the site's set up

A lot of filesharing Tumblrs use password protected blogs also.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-11 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Once content is reblogged to someone else's journal on tumblr, doesn't it stay there even if the original blog deletes or password locks itself?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-11 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Unless they've changed something recently, yes.

i don't think i've ever seen someone on tumblr publicly link to a fic they posted on their pw-protected sideblog

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
I've been on tumblr for years, and I've only run into that once. And even then the post I wanted to see was still visible since several other people reblogged it or I already had it in my 'likes'.

Not a lot of people do that though. I've ran into more deleted blogs than password protected blogs.

Privacy?

The desire not to spam everyone with things they weren't interested in?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-11 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok why do/did people use them when trying to interact with others?

To increase their friend lists.

As a mod, I had to warn people for linking f-locked post more than once (which was against the rules of the comm) and they always complained it wasn't a big deal, because people just had to add them and they'll add them back.

ok, that is obnoxious. :/

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I'm pretty sure that was the motivation behind, say, locked posts for icons, of all things.

...because they wanted to control who saw what content?

Honestly I think lack of easy privacy settings is a huge step down.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-11 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Can't you password protect whatever you want to keep private?

I completely agree. The whole privacy issue was a big deal for LJ users.....is it just not an issue for Tumblr users?

F-locking may be no more, but on AO3 you can change your fics so only registered users can read them. Then if you accidentally log out and try to go to the next chapter? Boom, fic gone. /really annoying

[personal profile] diet_poison 2015-01-12 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
At least AO3 doesn't log you out with the annoying frequency of ff.net.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I'm still active on LJ (hi!) and I lock posts that contain personally identifiable information. Those are restricted to a subset of close friends that I trust.

I don't lock any of my fannish stuff, though. Most of my stuff is public.

It's unlikely you'd even know I lock anything unless you happened to checked my profile, spotted that I'd last updated on {date} and realized you can't see anything posted on {date}.

I also know other people who occasionally use LJ as a personal diary. Unsurprisingly, they mark their personal-diary posts as Private.
lb_lee: M.D. making a shocked, confused face (serious thought)

[personal profile] lb_lee 2015-01-12 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, really? I mean, for me, f-locking is IMPERATIVE.

I move a lot, and so a lot of my IRL friends end up only being able to keep up with me via my blogs and stuff. There's a big difference between what I want them to know versus what I want my average fan of my prose to know, and there's enough overlap that I haven't wanted to make a separate account for my art/fiction.

And even if I actually did fandom, I could understand wanting to f-lock, say, some really, REALLY filthy porn you did or something. I'd think it a dick move to try and spam comms about it, but if you just wanted to share it with a few of your fellow filthy porn friends, I'd say it makes perfect sense.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 08:58 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe because they wanted to talk about something without running the risk of having their post linked somewhere they didn't want it to be and a hundred people showing up to dogpile them for their opinion?

I really don't get why this is bothering people. I get that it might be obnoxious if people are posting links to locked posts in comms, but otherwise, why would you care? I loved friendlock. The lack of it on Tumblr always makes me feel very unsafe.
