Maybe because they wanted to talk about something without running the risk of having their post linked somewhere they didn't want it to be and a hundred people showing up to dogpile them for their opinion?

I really don't get why this is bothering people. I get that it might be obnoxious if people are posting links to locked posts in comms, but otherwise, why would you care? I loved friendlock. The lack of it on Tumblr always makes me feel very unsafe.
