Really? blech.

(The only way I can possibly see anything like this is if you come at it from the angle that Fenris was a slave for so long that perhaps the structure of an organized religion might appeal to him on some level (except that iirc his personality in DA2 was more of a struggle to break from stricture and repression and obedience, so from that angle it doesn't work at all.)

He didn't exactly become super devout and drop everything to join the chantry. At most, he told Sebastian that he would think carefully about his feelings about the Maker and then a while later Sebastian caught him praying and Fenris tried to deny it. That was pretty much it

DA

Yeah. I never felt like Fenris found the Maker or became religious, only that he gave it a try. The same way an atheist might give praying a try, or giving going to a church a try. It was never stated whether he kept doing it or if he became religious or not.

That seems reasonable to me... he seemed pretty knowledgeable about the Qun as well, if I remember correctly.

Exactly.

He had another dialogue with Anders where Anders asked him if he'd ever considered committing suicide, and Fenris says "No, because it's a sin in the eyes of the Maker." Anders is like "you don't really believe that, do you?" and Fenris replies, "I try to."

I think he struggles with belief but he's going for it.

Faith and organized religion aren't the same thing. You're right that Fenris would sneer at being obedient to a Chantry that treats elves like him as second-class citizens at best, but Fenris uses his faith in the Maker, not the Chantry, as a reason to keep going - as he mentions to Anders, it's one of the reasons he didn't kill himself as a slave. He's not and probably never will be like Sebastian, blindly (or remotely) loyal to an institution, but that doesn't mean he can't have faith in the concept of a higher power.

Yeah, but lots of agnostics actually do the same thing... I wouldn't call that evidence of faith as much as evidence that someone isn't sure. Like fearing that maybe they're wrong and if they die they go to Hell, is different from really believing. I don't know if I'm explaining clearly, but it's possible to fear the off chance of godly wrath without believing in the god. Or something. That's what that line sounded like to me, but I've heard actual agnostics who have been suicidal say the similar things in RL.

Oh, no, Fenris definitely isn't sure. He doubts and questions, and wants to believe, but has reasons to be skeptical. I was just addressing the idea that if he did come to believe, it required him also having regard for the oppressive Chantry, which would likely go against his nature.

SA

I'm not an atheist!Fenris stan or anything btw. IMO he's one of those agnostics that want to have faith, or think it'd be easier to have faith, or think faith would be reassuring but find they can't, or that it's difficult to have it.

Nah, didn't think you were, and I agree, he's not a theist and may never be, just exploring the possibilities of it.
