Not op

There are plenty of perfectly rational reasons to have a problem with the teachings of Christianity. And definitely rational reasons not to like the Chantry.

And here you have it again: Confusing the faith with the institution.

The teachings of Christianity are, at their heart, love and acceptance - love thy neighbour as thyself, don't fucking judge people, don't be an asshole, especially not to those less fortunate than you, be generous etc. - Those are the teachings of Christianity and they are, in theory, good. Not above criticism in all regards, but the basic theory of this is a good and peaceful one.
What the church did with it, what people who use Christianity to disguise their bigotry, who pervert the goodness of the teachings to fuel hatred and their own self-righteousness do with it? That's a different thing altogether.

I'm not saying that you can't criticise Christianity. I'm just saying that the wide-spread attitude of "anyone of Christian faith is an idiot and evil" while preaching acceptance for other religions is pretty hypocritical (and I say that as a non-Christian person).

Those are not aline the core teachings of Christianity. Active condemnation of other gods, belief that they are the only correct religious path, and everyone else is going to hell - these are also central to the religion, especially how it was conceived. And that's ignoring the serious sexism, slavery, homophobia and so on presentin the text.

I'm not saying all Christians believe this, but it is canonical. And I agree it is grossly unfair to stereotype cChristians negatively. But it also seems grossly untruero characterize the canonical religion as peace and happiness.

And the Chantry also has its own bigotry and intolerance.

The main text of Christianity may by some people be regarded as "the whole bible" but the actual teachings of Christ (you know, the guy the religion is based on) is not that. You were talking about the "teachings of Christianity".

The teachings at their core are those of love. What people decided to do with it is the problem.

(I never said the Chantry didn't have that.)

Jesus was also obsessed with the apocalypse, believed others were going to hell, was -not- necessarily anti-war and absolute pro-peace, etc. His teachings were not this ultimate peace, love and happiness package deal. They just weren't.

And Christianity as a religion is a helluva lot more than merely the teachings of Jesus. I'm not sure any scholar, religious or otherwise, would argue that only the written sayings of Jesus are what defines Christianity. Christianity is an extension and sequel to Judaism, and always has been.

sa

and to add, Jesus also was Jew who believed in Old Testament teachings. His followers after all define him as the Messiah of Judaism. By definition, "Jesus Christ" cannot be separated from his religious significance.

I mean, you can believe whatever you want, and pick and choose your beliefs by all means. but you are still picking and choosing.

Unfortunately, most of the arguments against the Chantry that don't stem from the whole mage thing (which is a whole hell of a lot more complex than most fans on either side of the issue want to admit) tend to actually be arguments against Christianity, and as such don't necessarily apply. In fact, some of them are explicitly canonically inapplicable. People just can't seem to separate the RL institutions from the fictional one, because the latter takes a lot of thematic inspiration from the medieval church.

I'm not really in the fandom so I can't say. It'd be absurd to accuse the fictional Andrastian religion of things that aren't canon. But still, it was deliberately based on Christianity and functions very similar as a exclusive religious-political institution, that does do both good things and bad things. Like Christianity, a lot of the beliefs are not presented as historically compatible - like the common belief that Andraste's march was one of peace, when really she was leading an army. I mean, it's fictional, but it's blatantly mirroring Christianity. That being said, plenty of stuff is completely different - it doesn't seem to be sexist or homophobic, for example.
