That would kind of make the character even more useless though since the whole point to her was so there'd be an actual female presence in the movie since the original books were very much male centered.

Not that an inclusion of a woman just to give her a love triangle plot is GREAT but I don't think making her a man would have helped the movie at all.

It's a shame, because she almost rose above being the token female character, only to fall back into all of those problems in H3.

Oh GOD. The third movie was SO BAD. It was so so bad. She did NOTHING. Well, except getting him killed. Seriously, if she hadn't been there he probably would have survived.

H3 was bad all around. Tauriel isn't the only character whose dramatic potential got lost in order to show sandworms, troll siege engines, a swimming pool of cheese dip, and wire fu.

Kíli would not have survived the movie, even if Tauriel had not been there. He died in the book, and PJ would not have changed that. If you went in with the expectation that Thorin, Fíli or Kíli would have survived, I'm very sorry you had not availed yourself of spoilers or the book.

LOL no. He died due to plot. When she showed up he was in the middle of a suicidal solo charge into enemy territory, it was inevitable.

no

I haven't seen the last film yet so I still get to think Tauriel is fantastic. I loved her a lot more than I thought I would. A lot of that was down to the great acting from both her and the actor who played Kili. The pair of them can do a lot with just an impassioned glance.
