I was joking, anon. It was a joke that Tolkien, regardless of his sexual preference, could not leave the closet, on account of his closet now being six feet under the ground.

I have no actual opinion on Tolkien's sexual orientation, on account of knowing nothing about the man. I was joking.

I am inclined to believe he was very, very straight, as the story of his relationship with his wife is often likened to (and believed to be inspiration for) his fictional couple Beren and Lúthien. (Those names are even on their graves.)
