I'm sorry, all this secret has done is reminded me that I really want to see dwarf women with beards who are taken seriously.

Well, apparently animated Rat Queens is in progress. Violet just shaves because she's a hipster.

I still need to read that. I don't know why I keep putting it off.

Rat Queen is great. An animation's coming? Wwooooo!

Female dwarves are indistinguishable from male dwarves, both culturally and physically, in Discworld. Even after it becomes socially acceptable to identify as a female dwarf, those who come out still have beards.

Wearing more feminine chainmail is one thing. Shaving off the beard is an entirely different matter, and suggesting it is a good way to get a battleaxe shoved somewhere painful, and may even be classed as suicide in Amkh-Morpork (where a lot of idiotic actions are classed as such).

I really need to read Discworld stuff.

Out of curiosity, I read the first chapter of that.

I'm not even in this fandom and it made me tear up.

I think the fic gets even better as it goes on, too.

The amount of research this author has done into the world Tolkien creates plus the worldbuilding she does on her own is boggling. And it's all amazing.

She makes every single person in the Company plus their extended families feel real and alive and interesting, and I am just as interested in what happens to them as I am to Thorin/Bilbo or Gimli/Legolas.

I think true ensemble writing is really hard to pull off but this fic delivers.

In my AU headcanon, all the dwarf heroes in The Hobbit are closeted women, it's just that Bilbo doesn't know (and Gandalf isn't telling).

is Gimli just adopted or something?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-16 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
No, he would still have a father, but his mother would be Gloin.

Children have mothers?
