Well, a canon gay relationship in a big franchise like that would have been huge.

Pretty much, yeah. It probably still would have been boring and badly written, but at least it would have served an actual purpose.

It's good to know that trying to include women in what's otherwise a giant creepy sausagefest is not an "actual purpose." Only male characters can serve "actual purposes."

Including a good female character would have been making a point and having an "actual purpose". Including a female character just so she can be the love interest in a terribly written heterosexual love story is not an actual purpose the way a gay romance in such a big budget movie would have been. In fact, including a female character and then to downgrade her purpose to "that love interest chick" is pretty backwards instead of progressive.
