Somehow, I once found myself in Japan, using my very poor grasp of the language to translate a fellow tourist's desires for yaoi to the poor woman behind the cash register.

It was definitely... interesting. And I flat out refused to help him with his yaoi collection after that.

(What I mean is, I also knew a few folks like that in high school. It was WEIRD.)

that's kind of weird, since it's REALLY easy to find BL in Japan without even trying. Are you sure this is a true story?

To clarify: the tourist I was assisting was a gay anime fan from Texas, from a very conservative family, who was using his short trip to Japan to load up on all the yaoi he could get his hands on. He knew no Japanese, while I could speak enough to stagger through basic bookshop talk.

So he was well aware there was tons of yaoi around. The problem was that he didn't know enough of the language to be able to quickly arrow in on what he wanted, and he didn't want to waste his time sorting through the bookshop. (Especially since everything was shrink-wrapped, so he couldn't quickly leaf through the pages.)

And yes, it's a true story. I was there.
