Yeah because The Hobbit didn't have enough dudes already or anything.

(maybe if they'd made Kili female instead though. Some genderbending of the main cast would have been an excellent choice.)

I keep saying this - there are so many dwarves in that party, most of whom didn't even have any distinguishing traits other than differently coloured hoods in the book. They could easily have turned one or two into female dwarves (wouldn't even have had to change the designs too much, considering the beardedness of Tolkien dwarves.). And I say that as someone who normally dislikes genderbending. But the Dwarves in The Hobbit were largely so devoid of character that it could have worked perfectly.
But bearded, stocky ladies - can't have that in a big budget movie. No, it has to be an elven Mary-Sue. (I don't use the Mary-Sue descriptor lightly, but Tauriel fits the definition to a T).

They could even have kept Tauriel that way - just should have toned down her importance and actually have some of the (female) dwarves have some lines in the last movie.
