They shoehorned in a completely unneeded romance. That alone is enough to make the movie terrible. They also made several character bad guys for no reason.

Well, you answered part of the question yourself: a romance plot was added to fluff up the movie, I guess. Really pointless and annoying, if you ask me.

I'm sure there are other reasons, but that's a big one.

If they were going to pointlessly add pandering shit, they could at least have added more explosions and asskicking.

It was a coming of age story about a pre-teen or early teen character. All out romance kind of takes away from the main story. I usually love romance and do not have nostalgia goggles when it comes to this book, but I don't think it would have killed them to try and be more accurate to the original.

I saw the movie too and thought it was fine. It was a solid, interesting story with decent acting. My problem is that it was called The Giver. The book is essentially unfilmable because the slow reveals- no sun, no color, no geography- are only possible in print medium. Unfortunately, those slow reveals are intrinsic to the book because the reader is discovering along with Jonas just how dystopic his utopia is.

The movie took a couple of Lowry's characters and concepts and told a new story with them. It wasn't bad. It just wasn't The Giver.

The Giver is such a horrible title. I know nothing about this book but that's already put me off. I mean, what does he give them, herpes? His loose change? A nice day out? His dick? Could be anything.

Memories.

As someone who hadn't ever read the book (and honestly I still haven't), I quite enjoyed the movie. I didn't even know the romance was added until I head the fluff about it.

While I'm not going to argue with someone who's read the book when they say it was done wrong, I will happily argue the 'it's a terrible movie if you like it you suuuuuuck!!' aspect.

Didn't they completely change the ending?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
I last read this in middle school so I could be misremembering, but wasn't there a romantic subplot in the book? I recall Jonas developing feelings for his friend with the red hair and was put on medication to kill his sex drive when he told his parents about his feelings. Maybe I'm confusing it with another book.

Everyone took pills to suppress their sex drive. When Jonas started having sexually tinged dreams (called stirrings) about Fiona, he started taking the pills. It wasn't really a romantic subplot, just some wet dreams. They were good friends though.

Yes, but that was the absolute extent of it. Even after he stops taking the medication there's no further mention of romantic or sexual interest in her or anyone else. He barely even has any interaction with her once his training begins, and his most significant thought about her is the shock when he realizes that it will be part of his kind, gentle friend's job to euthanize the elderly.

Yes, actually, there is. I can't remember it exactly as it's been a long time, but he's talking with her toward the end, and he wistfully imagines running off with her, and not in the capacity of a friend.

I almost want to download the book or something just so I can find the scene. It's definitely there, and it definitely makes it pretty clear that he has feelings for her (feelings that he'll never act on, but feelings nonetheless).

I think a lot of people are just mad because it's not utterly true to the book. It went very differently on the adaption as it added the love story and with the flashbacks I felt it modernized it.

Honestly, I think it was doomed to fail. People are really getting tired of the YA, especially dystopian, book movies and they keep getting visceral hate. Some of which is just OTT.

Personally I thought it was decent and was surprised about the hate too. Then again, I hated The Fault in our Stars and want those two hours of my life back from watching two jerks make derp faces at each other. But a lot of people loved that adaption.

Honestly, I'd find just the book to be boring. He barely interacts with anyone, and when you're very people-oriented, that's... Not good. If it gives him more people to interact with, fine.

Text: I finally got around to watching this movie and I don’t understand why it did so badly or why most critics seem to hate it.

The acting is fairly good, the story is interesting, I liked the soundtrack. Other than aging Jonas up and adding a romance, it stayed pretty accurate to the book. What was the problem?

I admit I haven't seen the movie, but I have my doubts about how good of a movie that story could be, the way the book tells it. What I like about the book is that it is slow and quiet and, as somebody else in this comment thread pointed out, not a whole lot happens, objectively. At the time of its release it was groundbreaking, and now, in the midst of so many action-oriented dystopias, it's still really unique in terms of its mood, I think. Most of the book is just Jonas learning and processing how his world works, and ultimately making the decision to step away from it. It's introspective and quiet and the kind of story that's best told through words rather than images. I don't think that would've translated well to a movie no matter what they tried.

this. it was groundbreaking and still has some more unique aspects about it than the genre it helped found

I'm with you. I kind of think that a Giver movie was doomed to failure from the start because of that fact. So much of the action takes place in the heads of the characters and since movies are an audiovisual medium, unlike books which can play on all senses, they had no choice but to constantly talk about what was going on, which robbed it of much of its emotional power.

I liked the movie overall, too. I didn't necessarily like all the changes, but for the most part, I could understand why they did them. Fleshing out other characters was important, especially when the book did very little of it. I was not digging the obligatory love story at all, but I'm not against Fiona having a more active role. Seeing the perspectives of the other characters was useful, and giving a face to the dystopia was fine by me. I didn't like his best friend suddenly being an asshole and the friction between them, but I guess he sort of redeemed himself at the end? idk. And making the characters older... I'm on the fence about that one. Sometimes I think it's more realistic (like Ender's Game) but in this case, I'm not entirely sure it was necessary, beyond marketing reasons. Overall, I thought the movie was very pretty and very well done.
