I saw the movie too and thought it was fine. It was a solid, interesting story with decent acting. My problem is that it was called The Giver. The book is essentially unfilmable because the slow reveals- no sun, no color, no geography- are only possible in print medium. Unfortunately, those slow reveals are intrinsic to the book because the reader is discovering along with Jonas just how dystopic his utopia is.

The movie took a couple of Lowry's characters and concepts and told a new story with them. It wasn't bad. It just wasn't The Giver.

The Giver is such a horrible title. I know nothing about this book but that's already put me off. I mean, what does he give them, herpes? His loose change? A nice day out? His dick? Could be anything.
