You mean you don't want to get the application because of the songs you've downloaded through other methods? I have iTunes, and some music files I've obtained not via iTunes, and I've never had a problem.

iTunes might automatically copy your music files into the iTunes folder or organize your folders by album and artist depending on what your settings are, but ime that's about all it can and will do with them.

You can set up iTunes not to do this, if you don't want it to mess with your folders, before you import your library.

Not the OP, but how do you do that? I've got to move my music collection from an old computer to a new one, and I'd love to stop iTunes messing it up !

iTunes can store and play music from any source, not just the iTunes store. I don't see the issue.

Uh, what? You think using the iTunes program will somehow flag you for a pirate? That doesn't happen, don't worry.

Anon, if iTunes really messed with non-iTunes-Store-bought-songs, 90% of my library wouldn't be there.

Don't worry, iTunes doesn't mess with it.

I have a ton of music in my library that was burned from CDs several computers and 10+ years ago, plus music purchased from Amazon and Bandcamp and a few artists' websites, and Itunes has never "messed with" any of it.

There are plenty of good reasons to not want to install iTunes. This isn't one of them.

I don't understand your issue.
iTunes is basically like an iPod on your computer. You can buy songs from the store, but it also stores others songs you download.

Apple admits it deleted non-iTunes music off ipads for two years.

Suit was dropped.

Plus, I have a ton of music from other sources and iTunes never messed with any of it.

I admit I haven't used iTunes for a while, but doesn't it give you the option of whether you want to sync your music library with it or not?

Failing that, can't you create a new folder for your stored music that iTunes wouldn't check? i.e. don't leave them in the Libraries/Music folder, which iTunes might check if it doesn't give you the option of not adding your pre-owned/downloaded music to its library.

Text: Even though I would love to get more ringtones for my phone,

I’m scared to download or use this because I don’t want it messing with my 5428 songs I have downloaded.

I am a coward.

Same here Anon.

I had a friend who DLed a ton of a novelty singer's albums looking for a specific song. iTunes auto-synced them and to all her devices, shuffling them in, and she spent weeks trying to find and delete all the songs. She eventually gave up.

What. To sort by artist or album is one of the easiest things to do, even if you don't look under the 'recently added' list option.

You have the option of telling iTunes not to search for music on your computer when you run it for the first time, OP. Just be cognizant of what dialogue boxes you're okaying.

Exactly.

And you can buy a ringtone and it doesn't interfere with any of your other music - it's a different extension and it's under ringtones. You don't have to do anything with your other music in iTunes if you don't want to. I don't use the Podcasts app and everything is fine. I store all the songvids I have in iTunes and use another app to play them via iPad.
