Re: Fandom Annoyances

I've seen this in a lot of my fandoms. People bending nice parent characters OOC to be abusive because the author wants to write angst or something.

Like especially when there are already abusive characters in the canon, but they twist nice people into evil abusive parents.

I swear I'll never forget this Harry Potter fic where Hermione had and over the top abusive father who was so obsessed with keeping her around that he crashed her wedding to try and get her back. It was like a freaking Lifetime Movie Network thing.

I mean half of the annoyance is that they're ruining characters I love and the rest of it is that often the writing is so bad its like an afterschool special or a Very Special Episode.

lol I haaaaate that. I know that people love woobifying their favorite characters, but you can do that without giving them OTT abusive childhoods when it doesn't make sense. I've seen a couple of people in the Teen Wolf fandom write Sheriff Stilinski as this extremely abusive guy who relentlessly bullies poor widdle Stiles and it's hilariously stupid. Fortunately, most of the fandom loves the Sheriff so it happens pretty rarely.

And the Supernatural fandom looooves making John into a cartoonish monster who rapes/beats his children and is drunk like 24/7. Come on, the dude already isn't winning any Father of the Year awards. Why does Sam and Dean's childhood need to be more shitty? They're already good and fucked up.

Usually when it comes to Abusive!characterizations I believe that a character should show SOME signs of it in canon.

Like in the Digimon fandom , while I didn't agree with it, I could sorta see why people wrote Osamu as being that way because one of his big moments in one of the few episodes he appeared in was him being a jerk. I

I <b< still</b> think its a dramatic leap and pretty OOC to see a sibling argument and then write him as a maniac who beats his little brother regularly.

Abusive Tadashi Hamada on the other hand? Where the hell are you getting that?

omg yes, this is awful. WHY, FANDOM?

Yeah, people in one of my fandoms are constantly writing parents as abusive. Like, the parents are written in canon as being unrealistically perfect, but they don't make them abusive to give them depth, which would piss me off slightly less. They make them abusive because they want their favorite character to have a more angsty life.

In another of my fandoms, people give this treatment to their favorite character's perfectly kind, caring, supportive friends. In most cases, it's because they don't want their favorite character to have any positive relationships (even if they're just a friendship or sibling relationship) except with the other half of their OTP. It really creeps me out.

I remember a long time ago I read a fic for the W.I.T.C.H. series where everyone in Will's life mistreated and abused her, her friends turned on her and her own mom let her boyfriend abuse her. It was so awful and sad to read.

I turned out to be some sort of evil nightmare thing, so it wasn't OOC, but it still made it hard to read the fic.

lol, I love this, sorry. It allows other characters to be supportive and protective. The author should be upfront about OOC and bashing tho. I'm honestly immune to any bashing in HP wherein it's almost everywhere. Bash Dumbledore, bash Snape, write Dumbledore abusing Snape and vice versa, whatever.

I guess. I suppose I'm pretty particular about characterization in fanfiction. I suppose it's just because it seems pointless to me to be writing about characters that don't act like the characters.

But that's probably my own issue. I don't expect anyone to stop writing it though, I just want them to tag it and stuff. and I really wish people could write it in a non melodramatic way. That's my big problem with it. That and stories that seem like a big soapbox about how eeeeeevil abuse is.

I think your approach is awesome because you care about all the characters acting IC.

Thanks. I was worried about sounding like a snob about it.

Yeah, I find that annoying, too. I chalk it up to lazy writing, young/immature writers or people who are burdening their fic with their own parent-related issues.

Likely.

I mean I don't have an issue with the trope of abusive parents by itself as long as it's written well and not melodramatic.

Also I'm weirdly attached to some characters and making them into evil people (especially badly done evil people) just hurts my heart.

Oh, they totally are. I speak from experience. (Though I wasn't being abused - but neither was my character, things were still an OTT version of how I felt.)

I think people forget that a lot of the reason why those young/immature writers are loading their fics with stuff like this is part of why they're doing it in the first place. Yes it'll usually be wildly overblown and melodramatic, but it's a way of processing the things they're experiencing.
