Non-tragic lesbian literature

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm having a hard time finding books that aren't totally depressing. The only ones I've read are Patience and Sarah by Alma Routsong, and Ash by Malinda Lo. I also tried a few of Sarah Waters' books, but didn't really like her writing style.

Anyone have recs?

Annie on My Mind is a little angsty, but it's definitely not a tragedy. I've been told The Miko's Words and the Witch's Incantations is also hopeful.

You specified lesbian, not gay, but I'll make a token mention of Maurice. Also, Mysterious Skin is hopeful if you can get through a ton of angst along the way.

While I'm at it . . . I'll just drop this here. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GayAndLesbianFiction They're pretty good at specifying which books have sad endings.

OP

Thanks!

I've actually had Maurice on my reading list for quite some time. Never heard of that second one, though. It looks interesting!

OP

Just from reading the summary I have a feeling I'm going to love this no matter how badly written it is. Thank you!

Yeah, I pretty much HAD to read a lesbian version of Hades/Persephone. Hope you enjoy!

It's basically Greek Pantheon fanfic of the especially fluffy variety, and you could practically play femmeslash cliche bingo with it, but it was still a damn fun read and I loved the hell out of it.

Oh man I've got a couple of gay/lesbian e-books on my kindle like that and they are fantastic, they may not be great literature but they are fun.

I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes, light, fluffy, fan-ficcy LGBT books are exactly what I want to read, and nothing else will do. So, what are the titles of those books you have? I'm always looking to expand my e-book library.

Lets see: Scrum(which is about a Rugby fan and the Rugby Captain), Not my Wolf(Gay werewolves), First Class Package(guy has a crush on his mail man), A Sprinkling of Short Lesbian Stories(what is says on the tin really, lots of short f/f stories), and New Girl(lesbian volleyball players).

I think I've got some more but these were the ones I found the easiest in my kindle library.

To people who've read it, goes the book the "all men are EVIL and only set out to hurt the precious and pure lesbianswomen" route? I stopped reading shortly after Persephone went to hell, and it seemed to me as thought that was were it was going.

I mean, Zeus is a dick in the myths, but the book seemed to dial it up to eleven. And then the dead guy seemed to be a lecherous asshole as well. Aaaand it looked like Hades went through the kind of woobiefication even woobie!Loki stans would be embarrassed about. Did I get the wrong impression? I love Greek myths and picked the book up because I thought a lesbian Hades/Persephone story could do no wrong, but the impression I got soured me on the book. :/

Nah, that's pretty much the right impression. I still enjoyed it anyway, but I can't blame you for being put off.

Santa Olivia by Jacqueline Carey

I've still yet to read Fingersmith so idk if it's tragic or not.

Laura Caxton by David Wellington

Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett

Banshee's Honor by Shaylynn Rose

Vows and Honor Mercedes Lackey is a fave, but it's not entirely lesbian. One is p. much asexual and she's ?bonded? to another warrior lady who on occaison may sleep with a man. So kind of heterosexual life partners? but i loved the relationship so if you dont mind that.

I would definitely disagree with the characterization of Laura Caxton as non-tragic. Granted, it's hyperviolent action with vampires and gun porn, but it's still a series about a woman who painfully loses everyone she cares about.

Thinking about it, I'd have to agree!

I think I took OP's post to mean less "no happy endings for lesbians" trope than avoiding tragic books in general. Serves me right for not having coffe ^^;;

Seconding Santa Olivia. Didn't care for the sequel, but the first was a great read.

When Women Were Warriors by Catherine M Wilson, it's a trilogy, multiple lesbian relationships. It goes some dark places over the course of the story, but it's definitely got a happy resolution for most of the characters, and I loved it to death. First book is free as an ebook.

If you haven't read The Price Of Salt, stop everything you're doing and go read it. First published under a pen name by the great Patricia Highsmith, it was the first lesbian novel that didn't go straight for death and tragedy. It's not just that it stands as a milestone, it's also an INCREDIBLY readable and engaging book. Go! Go now!
