What qualifies as "Light dom/sub"?

I see it in fic tags on AO3 all the time and was wondering what distinguishes it from..."heavy" d/s, I guess?

Personally, I'd expect it to include one person mostly in charge, maybe a slight bit of bondage, but nothing beyond that. I wouldn't expect pain play, humiliation, or anything like that.

Yeah this. I would not expect safewords, subspace, and all that stuff.

Generally "light" vs. "heavy" BDSM tends to differentiate between people who are very into a lifestyle and people who aren't.

Light BDSM will never feature extreme kinks like bloodplay, piercing, ownership/slave play, etc. Usually you can expect that it's just a bit of kinky sex between two partners who are otherwise in a non-D/s relationship.

NA

IMO like 80% of stuff that's tagged with Light BDSM at least on AO3 could be tagged more accurately (or, I guess, additionally) as Bondage or Dominance specifically. Because that seems to be what it mostly amounts to.

Would that be accurate w/ your experience?

Well, the SM side of the BDSM equation has never strictly been a requirement, even for people who consider themselves part of the "lifestyle". It's all due to the fact that S&M is something that's usually an all or nothing kink- most people either really enjoy it or really don't.

But I'm old, see. For me having to tag too specifically for things is just not something I care to do or see in fic because it ruins part of the surprise.

I get the impression it's mostly implied, in the sense that one character is usually more dominant and the other plays along, and maybe there's a bit of kink with tying people up or pain... but that's about it.

Whereas "regular" d/s fic will usually have it explicitly stated in the fic, such as the characters playing along with a scenario or something, and a much bigger emphasis on kinky stuff.

Does that help?

"Light D/s" is basically some characters getting into more "fleeting" and "shallow" BDSM play in bed, only (i.e. there won't be kinks that can leave marks or signs of any kind for longer than a day or two, it's really just for when they're in bed, etc.) "Heavy D/s" is more of a character being dominant not just for sexual purposes but other ones as well (sometimes a 24/7 deal, sometimes it just means being a bit bossy or domineering in contexts outside of bed, etc.), and/or there are kinks that have a more long-term affect (so serious bruises or marks, more psychologically-involved kinks, etc.)
