Favorite Painting and/or Artist

[personal profile] othellia 2015-01-20 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Got brought up in a conversion I had today and I was curious. If you don't have a favorite particular painting, feel free to list an artist.

My favorite painting (and has been since I was seven) is Picasso's Guernica. (somewhat graphic)
https://hdaregnault.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/hgap-picasso-guernica-19376.jpg

Hopper's Nighthawks is a close second though.

I love a LOT of art, and it's hard to pick one thing. Also because there are so man genres. But to pick one - I adore this one by Felice Casorati: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/0c/86/a1/0c86a138e58281a9f98910cd67cec542.jpg

Oh wow. I love how the back of the carpet extends out to the edges of the frame. It kind of gives me a feeling of weightlessness.

Sadly, the photo's not very good. In person, the textures are amazing, especially the image on the shield.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti is one of my favourites. I like particular sensuality that pre-Raphaelite art has.

My favourite sculpture is Psyche Awakened by Cupid's Kiss by Antonio Canova. I remember just being so struck by it when I first saw it.

I'm gonna add one of my fav illustrators, Sheilah Beckett on here because I loooved her storybook illustrations as a child.

The first one that comes to mind at the moment is Remedios Varo. Here are a few of her paintings.

Most of my favorite artists are surrealists, fantastic realists, symbolists, and expressionists.

I like a lot of Caspar David Friedrich's paintings.

The empire paintings immediately made me think of this, which turns out to be by the same guy. I've seen it in the museum.

Jacques Louis David painted The Farewell of Telemachus and Eucharis. I think it's beautiful and I have a print of it I need to frame. Also, I like male flesh.

My favorite painter of all time is John William Waterhouse. I especially love his Lady of Shallot, and The Mermaid paintings.

One of my favorites has always been Guernica, and seeing the original in Spain is an art highlight for me.

I saw this painting when it was on loan to our local museum and loved it ever since.

A Bar at the Folies-Bergère by Manet is a long term favorite of mine.

Also just in general, Romaine Brooks is an artist I think more people should know. She was mostly a portraitist but they have a quality to them I respond to.

I'll always have a soft spot for Katherine Coville. She was a huge inspiration to me as a wee tiny, as was Julie Bell. (Though that hasn't aged as well.)

I don't have favorites.

That Leonardo chap did some really cool stuff with color mixing.

I like some of the pre-Raphaelites, I like Art Nouveau, I like a lot of stuff.

These may not be my favorite paintings evet, but they are two I make a point of seeing when I go to the local art museum:

Flowers in Terra-cotta Vase by Jan van Os
http://collection.mam.org/details.php?id=21742
The whole thing is incredibly photo-realistic. They have glass over it because people are always getting their faces up in there trying to look for brush strokes.

Scholar of Natural Sciences by Carl Spitzweg
http://collection.mam.org/details.php?id=7760
I don't know why I love this but I do. I think it's because I want that work space, stuffed alligator and all. (That gallery was closed last time I went.)

Oh! Oh! I really like Judith Slaying Holofernes by Artimesia Gentileschi! But I love the Judith story, and Gentileschi was a pretty interesting person on her own.

I really like a lot of abstract art. Cut my teeth on Kandinsky, but really prefer Rothko and Newman.

Yago Hortal and James Turell. The furst one always improves my mood and the second one makes me want to visit at least one of his installations.

If you twisted my arm and I had to choose one artist, it would be Rembrandt -- he doesn't paint people how they look, he paints them how they are; he's fascinated by costume and how it transforms a person; and he's infinitely compassionate. I love his work.

The Syndics:

And one I'd never seen before I went to see The Late Works at the National Gallery in London, Hera:
