Meyers was popular? At most, the people I knew who liked the movie were either indifferent to him or didn't really remember/cared that he existed. I got the point of his character -the audience POV-type-, and while I have no opinion about him (he's just kinda... there), I was kinda glad they put him on a bus for HBII for the sake of the story. He wouldn't have fit in with it at all, imo.

Totally agree about Johann. Seth MacFarlane did do a decent job, I will admit, but he gives me douche chills. (Funny story: I remember I griped a couple times on the old HBII movie forums about MacFarlane being cast. When I actually got a chance to meet Del Toro in person, at a private fan screening of the movie, he remembered my dislike of Danny Elfman more than MacFarlane, haha)

And yes, I agree as well. I'd love a third Hellboy movie so much... but I'm beginning to doubt we'll ever see one, especially with the glut of comic book movies in general and the bubble dangerously close to bursting over the next 2-3 years. :(

I would like to politely disagree on your point that John wouldn't have fit in the second movie. Considering that Professor Broom hand-picked John as Hellboy's human connection and that Hellboy's public exposure had him questioning his belonging with them, I think John would've been very relevant to showcase the good that Broom had shown HB.

Whether that would've been interesting or not is another story but I did feel John's absence in this regard -- like they just forgot the whole point of him from the first movie.

That's fair. I felt that, between Hellboy and Liz's relationship issues, coupled with Abe and Nuala, plus everything else (Johann, the BPRD/Hellboy being exposed to the public)... having Meyers inserted in between all of that would have been too much, imo. He'd served his purpose as the audience surrogate, so there technically wasn't any need for him to be around anymore.

That said, I would have gladly swapped Jeffrey Tambor's character (whose name is on the tip of my tongue, gah) out for Meyers. Maybe they could have pink slipped Tambor's guy after Hellboy became public and replaced him with Meyers for PR purposes... admittedly, it's been a while since I've seen HBII, so I'm not sure how that could have worked.

Manning?

Yeah, Manning became irrelevant once Johann was brought in. They were serving the same point.

I think if they had gotten rid of the entire Human vs. Other plot, then John wouldn't have had relevance. But, since they did go there, I just felt his absence every time HB was made to feel like an outsider.

Sidenote: I actually did like Manning in the second film. He's so pathetic, it's endearing -- though I could totally see if not everyone felt the same. :)

Hellboy doesn't need a human connection. His entire life is trying to reach that human connection, actively. He was a pointless addition.

what's wrong with danny elfman? just curious, i hadn't heard anything.

Just not a huge fan of his music, that's all. It's not really my cup of tea.

I do like some of his Oingo Boingo-related stuff, and I liked his musical number in 'The Corpse Bride', but that's about it.
