In terms of fandom, the only thing I can think of is:

1) a fandom that "sporked" fan fiction

2) the funny portmanteau couple name for Kirk/Spock (Spork!)…so maybe Star Trek TOS?

Besides that, I got nothin'

I was thinking about 2) but it doesn't fit.
Spike from Buffy? No idea. Maybe the relation is very 'somewhat' as the OP put it.

How does it not fit? Spock plus Kirk = Spork.

I realize people typically use "Spirk" but I've always considered that a failure of fandom when "Spork" is so much funnier.
