I'm guessing it's because of internet access, the number of trans people remains about the same (well, it's bigger in my generation as we had a baby-boom in 80s/90s) - however, many closeted folks started to search for info and talk.

Puzzling enough, fandom now latched onto asexuality which had been a big thing in the 90s, but not in fanfiction context (maybe? Didn't read fanzines back then, no access). Next year it'll be something else not widely talked about now.
