Yeah, trans* in anime confuses me. Especially since girly looking men/girly dressing men is actually a genre/fetish over in Japan. They're honestly not supposed to be seen as actual women.

I'm guessing it's because of internet access, the number of trans people remains about the same (well, it's bigger in my generation as we had a baby-boom in 80s/90s) - however, many closeted folks started to search for info and talk.

Puzzling enough, fandom now latched onto asexuality which had been a big thing in the 90s, but not in fanfiction context (maybe? Didn't read fanzines back then, no access). Next year it'll be something else not widely talked about now.

Trans is Tumblr's flavor of the month even without the association with fandom.

When it does come to fandom, it's pretty much reached the point where if you don't make at least one character in your fanfic trans (however nonsensical this might be when you take canon itself into account), then you're obviously transphobic.

Text: I think trans is Tumblr fandom’s flavor of the month. Everywhere I look I find trans headcanons, fanarts and fics. I know there are some trans people there, but this big amout of trans fanwork baffles me. Like in Boueibu, just because they are wearing something girly, they are trans.

Not even considering the part where the lamer ones are based on gender stereotypes and other pigeon holes, most transfanon meta there is boring as fuck. Tbf, I do have a preference for those that don't change the character's gender but the assumption that they're cis. Still digging through a cliche yawnfest though.

Not really related to this secret, but I wasn't really buying in until they got to the reveal of the Shadow Utena Council at the end of the pilot, at which point I could not stop laughing. And I was the only Utena fan in the room so nobody, and I mean nobody else had any idea what I was on about.

Funniest damn thing they'd done and I couldn't even explain why.

I'm just glad to be seeing trans characters being SOMETHING besides jokes or tragedies. I am more than happy to put up with the sheer level of crap that comes with it. Give me Trans Mary Sue saves the Marvel Universe over another Trans Tragedy any day of the week.

a lot of people who headcanon characters as trans only buy into the same gender constructs that bind a lot of trans people to begin with, ie. "x character wears boyish clothes so i'll headcanon them as a trans man."

It's just the same crap that people come up with where the girl who's not a typical girly-girl is a trans guy. Fuck that shit. I'm not a very feminine girl, but I'm just fine with my gender thank you very much.
