I'd say decade - it's basically the logical development after they got bored of fetishising gay guys/it wasn't ~exotic~ enough anymore that they switched to the next non-normative sexual orientation or gender business while whining it's all about social justice, representation and OMG THINK OF THE TRANS PEOPLE instead of just, you know, their fetish. Trans just happened to be the next best thing and it will probably be discarded in a few years in favour of some new fetish fad.
