I liked Madoka, but it was pretty offensive: women can't do anything or can't have a real impact in the history of humanity without space cats giving then magical powers. The message of Madoka is that a women can't change the world by themselves but only with the help of a space alien.
It's terrible message. The show dismissed all the strong women of world accompaniments, saying that they need someone else to succeed: Joan of Arc, Anne Frank, etc. Really what is says that non magical girls can't do anything worthwhile.

Magical girl anime is supposed to be about how awesome girls can be. Not this shit.

But all magical girls get their powers from something else? Madoka didn't invent that. Not to mention it's a classic magical girl cliche for the girls to be useless before they magically get their powers.

Also, you should read some about magical girls from a Japanese perspective. You might rethink your claim that it's "supposed to be about how awesome girls can be."

Apart from the gender lines, I'm not sure I get how that's necessarily different from when some video game says historical figures were being controlled by aliens, secret societies, or alien secret societies. I mean, it just picked a few examples, essentially out of a hat--that's not the same as saying something about ALL WOMEN in big massive letters. (Kyubey claims his species is responsible for everything humanity achieved, but it's fucking Kyubey. There are maybe two points in the entire series when he tells the full truth without spinning it to his own benefit.)

Kyubey claimed that humans would still be living in caves if it weren't for their assistance. Women needed incubators to succeed but women were also the hidden driving force behind all of humanity's achievements. Without incubators, no human could have achieved anything.


The message here isn't that women are useless but perhaps that you shouldn't trust the word of a manipulative space alien who specializes in cultivating and harvesting despair?

This. Humanity wasn't able to move forward without incubators period; not men, not women. But it's women that used their power to propel society forward, not men.

Madoka Magica isn't any more sexist than other magical girl anime, imo.

Magical girl anime is supposed to be about how awesome girls can be.

No it's about enforcing gender norms for young girls by showing all the powerful girls as frilly, feminine, romantic etc. (even the tomboyish ones get femme-ized when they transform). You're applying western ideals to magical girl anime. I love magical girl anime, but it's viewed as sexist among a lot of Japanese feminists.
