Are you kidding me? Seinen magical girl anime have been the du jour since long before Madoka. If you want to blame an anime for making that explode, blame maybe Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, where incidentally the girls are MUCH younger.

Anyway, most of the people I've seen condemning this show are the same people who think you've got shit taste if you like Madoka because the only magical girl shows that should exist are the ones written for girls (ignoring the fact that many Japanese feminists think they are really problematic and need to be curbed as well because they give the message that the only way for a a girl in Japan to have power is to stick to feminine gender norms; aka weaponized femininity doesn't have the value in Japan that it does in the west).

Nanoha is completely irrelevant. Madoka on the other hand popularized grim-dark magical girls.

Hardly, there's been barely any grimdark magical girl anime since.

If anything Nanoha popularized magical girl aimed adult men, but plain old regular fairs better overall because it primarily targets young girls and also has a periphery demo of adult men.

Not at all. Multiple series have tried to be the next Madoka, but only Yuki Yuna wa Yusha de Aru has been remotely successful (other shows like Daybreak Illusion and Selector Infected Wixoss have pretty much bombed in sales). So PMMM didn't popularize grimdark magical shows, it's just a dark magical show that happens to be popular.

Nanoha is not at all irrelevant. You mentioned PMMM 'stealing the genre from girls', and Nanoha was doing that years before PMMM came around with its explosive popularity (also; fanservice, which PMMM didn't have). Nanoha is a huge franchise that is STILL around. It changed the landscape of magical girl shows, and if any one series is to blame, it's it.
