There's a difference between thinking someone's fat and photoshopping their head onto a whale.

If she was concerned about the former, then yeah. Weight loss is a valid suggestion. But the latter is just vile, and the blame does lie squarely with them.

Teenagers physically lack empathy, so I'm not surprised at all by this behavior. Tie that with shitty parents letting their precious angels do whatever the hell they want and you get a bunch of assholes. Luckily most people grow out of it when they get to their mid twenties.

Um, what? That's just a bald-faced lie. I wouldn't be surprised if it's lack of responsibility on the parents' part, put that doesn't apply to all parents, and definitely not all teenagers. The worst bullies are the ones with the most responsibilities on their plate, 'cause they think they run the damn show. Those are the ones who might lack empathy, not all teens. Fuck you, very much.

I'm not surprised either. But that doesn't mean it's right.

Also yeah, it is victim blame-y. There's a difference between saying, I don't know, "Well I warned you if you didn't lose weight you might not make the cheerleading team" and "Well I warned you if you didn't lose weight that someone might stick your head on a whale."

Um, we start to develop empathy from we're quite young (like around 3-6 or so I think). Teens definitively have empathy, some less than others sure, but they do have it.

children have to be taught empathy and that's on the parents.

Sure, it's nurture, but that anon said teens physically lack empathy, which in most cases is not correct.
