Make yourself a castle cake, and if anyone complains, declare yourself Absolute Monarch and chop off their heads take away their cake.

For serious, though, do you prefer to make cakes from scratch, or from mixes?

Oh my god. Okay story time.

For my third birthday (January 1992), I had a Beauty and the Beast party, because the movie had just come out, and a castle cake very much like that one. My mom made it the night before the party, after she put me and my sisters to bed, and she had a bitch of a time with one of the ice cream cone towers staying up. Eventually she got it up, but the area was kind of damaged from her repeated attempts. She goes into the living room and sits down, probably with a well-deserved beer. Five minutes later, she hears the faint, but distinctive sound of cake and cone falling down onto wax paper. I think for the party she gerry-rigged something (propped up with spoons?), and she told my friends that that less-pretty tower was the West Wing!

My mom always made really awesome cakes like that. She designed her own R2D2 cake for my sister's Star Wars party, and this was in the days when you needed to go to specialty stores for vibrant blue, black, and silver icing.

Anyway, I am open to either kind of cake. I do bake from scratch, but I'm certainly not prejudiced against modified-cake-mix recipes. The chocolate rum pie I mentioned was made with brownie mix, and it is amazing.

Oh my god that's hilarious! And your mom sounds awesome!

I admit, I don't have a lot of from-scratch recipes, but that's because I use the Cake Doctor books, and seriously, they're amazing! My personal fav is the Cookies and Cream cake, which is also available in her chocolate cake doctor cook book I believe.

We have one Cake Doctor book, geared towards cupcakes. I think we've only made 2 things out of it- a kinda-dry chocolate peanut butter thing, and a good lemon cupcake topped with lemon curd whipped cream and a raspberry. We served those at my sister's baby shower. It's funny, I was thinking if I couldn't come up with something, I might do those again.

Okay, reading that cookies and cream cake recipe, I see she's very into that flavored whipped cream thing.

Our favorite for modifying mixes are "Brownie Mix Bliss" and "Cake Mix Cookies" by Camilla Saulsbury. The brownie mix book has turned out amazing creations for us for 10 years now-- not just brownies, but cookies, cakes, etc. Mmmmmm.

That is funny. :)

Yeah, she is. I mean, I don't personally mind, I'm actually a huge fan, lol, but it mightn't be for everyone.

I'll look into those! Thanks for the rec. :D
