I read the first four books around the time GoF came out and world-wide publicity cropped up about "the books that are getting children reading again!". I got into the fandom some time in 2003 and was in it when OotP was released, bit I wandered off into LotR and by the time HBP finally came out my interest was practically nil, so I only ever managed to read the first few pages and never did get around to reading the rest of the book.
I did however get through DH, but I admit that by then my relationship with the whole story was at a bit of an emotional remove, so it didn't have nearly as much impact.

Simply put, when I left the fandom for other things, my attachment to the characters either died, or was drastically cut and has never recovered. I have gone back to read HP fanfic, as it's still a decently prolific fandom to read in, but fic has to be about Harry if it is going to draw me in, as he's one of the few I still like enough to bother with.
