The Harry Potter series is a bit like the Bible* in that it's good to read even if you don't enjoy it since it's very heavily referenced in popular culture.

*Exaggeration, obviously

Actually Harry Potter is more like the B-izzle in that it's essentially a Christ story.

I really don't agree.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-21 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I noticed sooner, but it took me longer to get why I don't care about any HP character (I did it after finishing the seventh book, in fact): most of them are reactionary characters and that makes them boring for me.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-21 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I realize now that the only one I really gave a shit about was Harry. Didn't cry for any character death in that series except Sirius's and that was because of how Harry took it. And him going into the forest to die himself.

Not a popular opinion; most people I know don't seem to think of Harry as a character when choosing a favorite, it's more like he's a lens with which to view out than an actual character. But I adore him. We grew up together (literally -- age 11 when I read book 1, age 18 when I read book 7).

(Anonymous) 2015-01-21 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
I actually agree with this.

I was shocked at Cedric's death but didn't really care about him

Had little reaction to Sirius, Remus, Tonks, Fred, Snape, Dobby, etc.

I had to go back and re-read Dumbledore's death, I remember, but I still didn't care.

And, yeah, I completely agree that Harry is really the only character I cared about.

I've noticed the same thing but I love Harry too.

I will agree with you there.

I reacted to Sirius' death, because at the time the book came out I was actively in the fandom and I did like him. Harry however was always my central favourite. He's the one we got into the head of, so everything I read was usually about him, one way or another (and because I am a shippy shipper who ships, that often meant practically all the pairings I read were Harry/[someone]).

Since then? As I have drifted away from the fandom, then returned to read fanfic in between whatever my active fandom is, the one character who I still retained a strong enough attachment to, to really draw me back was Harry. I may read more het now than I did back in '03, but it's still pairings that are half Harry.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-22 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Harry was my favorite, too (I'm also the rare fandom bird who disliked Hermione. Annoying ass pain.)

You lasted a book longer than I did. But I stopped for the same reason--after the fifth book, I realized I just didn't care, and I never picked up the rest of the series. And it doesn't really bother me. It was a fun read while I was into it though.

Book 3 for me. God, but they are so fucking dull.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-21 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I was ALL about Neville and Luna, also liked Snape before his batshit fans and later developments burnt me out.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-21 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
These were my three as well, Luna in particular, but by book 6 I was flagging badly and I mostly skimmed rather than read book 7. Even Neville's awesomeness wasn't enough by that point.

Burned out is the word, I think. I just got too tired for it.

I stuck with the series to the end, but by Book 4 I was more interested in the universe in general, and especially its history. My HP fanworks were predominantly pastfic (some of it set in the 19th century...), and the ones that weren't usually had some kind of tie to events before the series (the first Order of the Pheonix/Voldemort war, for example).

I only read through book 5. While I don't dislike the characters, I don't love them either. I love the universe much more.

I love most of the characters in HP but realising that you don't care for anyone in a book makes it very rough going. I remember feeling that way when we did A Streetcar Named Desire at school. I didn't give a shit about any of them. At least in the film you've got Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh's pretty faces to look at but reading the play was a hard slog by the end. I just wanted them all to die.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-21 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Book 4. I gave up then despite all my friends saying "oh but it gets so much better!" Really? Does it make me want to give a single crap about Magical Boy and his friends? Why would it take five books to get me to care? I cared maybe a little more for Snape despite the fact that he was an asshole. idk, maybe I was too old when HP came out. The films started when I was 20. I didn't have the experience of growing up with Harry despite the fact that we are the same age if he was a real person.

The 4th for me.

I like the world, the au and all the character meta etcetc

Don't care much for the canon material. Just...lost interest.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-21 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
Harry was a rude asshole. Hermione was annoying know it all. And Ron was an easily butthurt prick.

Even though I did like them, they became more unlikable as the story progressed.

I read the first four books around the time GoF came out and world-wide publicity cropped up about "the books that are getting children reading again!". I got into the fandom some time in 2003 and was in it when OotP was released, bit I wandered off into LotR and by the time HBP finally came out my interest was practically nil, so I only ever managed to read the first few pages and never did get around to reading the rest of the book.
I did however get through DH, but I admit that by then my relationship with the whole story was at a bit of an emotional remove, so it didn't have nearly as much impact.

Simply put, when I left the fandom for other things, my attachment to the characters either died, or was drastically cut and has never recovered. I have gone back to read HP fanfic, as it's still a decently prolific fandom to read in, but fic has to be about Harry if it is going to draw me in, as he's one of the few I still like enough to bother with.

Huh.
So I stopped reading after book 4 but now that you mention it, I mostly cared for the atmosphere and the school and all the magical things happening and never really particularly for any of the characters. Well.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-22 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I stopped caring right when I got to that book too. The writing just dipped in quality.

I did this with The Famous Five. I went through all twenty one books and realised I didn't really like any of them. The only time I remembered enjoying myself was when Juilian fell off the top bunk thinking it was a normal bed. THAT WAS HILARIOUS.

I got rid of them to the Vincent de Paul.
