You have no idea how happy it makes me how many Babylon 5 secrets there are here. Also, I approve of this secret. I myself like them all in the sense of thinking every single character is an interesting one, even if my feelings about, say, Bester are more of the "I love to hate him and really wanted to watch him die onscreen" variety.

I love it, too, I just rarely have anything to contribute.

Oh, me too. I never have secrets to share. I'm just so happy there are fans still. I got into the show so late that I figured the fandom would be dead. Only it isn't. It is small, but fairly active. And every time I see a secret about B5, seeing these characters makes me happy.

What's going on, fandom-wise? I don't really ship anyone, and I'm mostly in it for the screenplay, so not sure what "fandom" things I'd do.

Most of what is written is either gen, Sheridan/Delenn, or Londo/G'Kar. Although there is a fair dose of Susan/Talia and some minor pairings like Delenn/Leneer as well. There is a B5 love community on livejournal that hosts a Babylon 5 love fest for a month every year. I think it is coming up in a few months. But this year they are planning a rewatch of some of the best episodes first. I haven't been online much this week, but the discussion posts are up.

There is also Universe Today, the B5 news journal that gives updates on things in the fandom like new fics.

YES YES YES

I

STILL

LOVE

THIS

SHOW

I bought a goddamn VCR for this show. An old Betamax I got from a neighbour or something for $50 because it and Seaquest DSV and something else were on at the same time and I was not missing stuff and besides, I had been watching JMS on Usenet going on about how things would mean more later and THEY ACTUALLY DID and and and.

It was SO GOOD, even when it was not good it was good.

Is the Babylon 5 fandom really that bad? I keep hearing that it is, but I've never participated in it myself.
(Also I love Bester. Because his awesome creepiness, and Walter Koenig.)

[personal profile] philstar22 2015-01-22 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Not in my personal experience? I honestly haven't seen any of the bad, at least recently. If there was that stuff, I think it has mostly died down.

The fandom isn't bad... now. I heard there was a big thing a year or so ago about Londo that caused people to leave the fandom. They still hang around the fringes trying to start shit sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-22 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
I adore Bester, even if he does cause a few crossed wires for me of the 'wow, Chekov grew up and became telepathic Khan!' variety. He's so incredibly creepy and so much fun to watch, and has some surprisingly heart-tugging moments. He's awesome.

Pretty sure the fandom is fond of Bester. The only person that gets hate regularity is Byron, but it's not that bad. I dunno. My corner of the fandom is pretty respectful of ALL the characters and I only see hate if I search certain tags on Tumblr. Every once in a while we get a resurgence if Londo hate, especially if a new fan doesn't make sure to mention in every post how problematic and awful he is. (I accidentally started a Londo shitstorm once, I think.) we like people in the fandom who like everyone, so you should join it.

The Londo thing also sometimes comes from people who are watching it for the first time. Like, I know during seasons 3 and 4, I hated him and couldn't feel bad for him the way the show wanted me to. And then we got to the end of season 4 and then season 5, and suddenly once we had his whole character arc I could sympathize with him and maybe understand him.

I remember seasons 3 and 4 were soooo hard for me. I pretty much gave up on Londo, but I had a fandom friend who was like "Just hang on. You are going to love the end of his arc. This is going somewhere good." And it did and I loved it (and cried a lot).

[personal profile] philstar22 2015-01-22 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. He is never going to be my favorite character (that would be G'Kar and Susan), but his arc is amazing once you've seen the whole thing. And by the end he has more than paid for everything he ever did.

My sister and I called Bester 'Worster'. (It was an affectionate nickname.)

I've ever only been able to read the canon published books that joe authorized....and it's for this exact reason. You are so not alone.

It’s why I can’t be in the fandom. I just want to keep loving them.

From what I've experienced of the Babylon 5 fandom, it's actually quite postive and non-wanky.

ps NOT A SECRET

Goddamn I LOVED SINCLAIR.

LOVED Sinclair.

Even if okay maybe he's a bit of a tree. BUT SO WHAT HE WAS AWESOME.

I have the Japanese laserdisc (the only way to get the original pilot unedited) because FUCK YEAH SINCLAIR :D

(don't get me wrong the re-edit is better overall but they did one thing I don't like and it's a really good moment and I still have it because Japanese laserdisc. Also I kind of liked some of the cheesy rock music. :D )

I love this shoooooooooooooooooooooow

Sinclair! I loved him too, although I also love Sheridan. And I totally threesome ship the two of them and Delenn. Nothing will convince me to stop headcanoning that the three of them slept together during the journey to the rift in World Without End.

I shipped Talia and Ivanova insofar as I shipped anyone, because HOLY CROW LESBIANS! (or bisexuals in Ivanova's case of course) but mostly I wasn't into the whole shipping thing.

Frame by frame analysis, tho'? CAN DO SPORT. :D

(Oh don't think I didn't like Sheridan, I really did. But Sinclair... damn. :D )

Bester was a phenomenal character. Walter Koenig gave an A+ performance too.

OP is so happy

(Anonymous) 2015-01-23 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, you guys are the best.

I just couldn't get into the fandom because I remember seeing someone bitching about Dr. Franklin and Ivanova and I just went, "But...but they're cool. They're all cool. Why the hate?"

I only saw seasons 3 and 4, and now I'm two episodes away from the complete series after watching it from start to finish. I so badly wish that there was another show like this with little bits updated and some better effects.

Not gonna lie that I kinda thought of Byron as just a slightly more annoying Evil Replacement Marcus, but I got what they were going for with his character and the larger story at hand. I really have to say the worst thing someone can say against it is that you do start to see how it was constrained by the time of its creation. There's only so much you could get away with on TV.

Anyone heard anything about the reboot?

In my experience, this is one the most loving fandoms around. Characters may get mocked for certain traits, but to me it mostly seems to be done out of love; some people may actually dislike a character here or there, but the overall fandom consensus tends towards love for pretty much everyone. About the only characters I see a lot of fandom gets down on are Keffer and Byron and even then a lot of it's kind of tongue in cheek. Back in the day Lockley was a somewhat acceptable target, but doesn't seem to be anymore.

But I worry that the reboot may be the thing that breaks this fandom love fest. I see most people being optimistic about it though, because as a group I think we love JMS's world too much to doubt him too hard; even if personally I have my doubts whether B5 can work as a movie (but I know myself well enough to know that come hell or high water or attack by the First Ones, I'll be there opening day if it happens).
