[Weekly Wipe with Charlie Brooker]

I haven't seen this show but this is how I feel about Last Week Tonight w/ John Oliver!

(Anonymous) 2015-01-22 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Last Week Tonight is sooooooooooooo good ... possibly because it is easier picking out central issues/writing good bits if you've a week to do it instead of a day?

I see what you mean, but I think part of its strength comes from the fact that it has fewer episodes and only comes on a few weeks per year. That way they can look at broader trends and analyze them, compared to how TDS (and TCR) mostly focus(ed) on recent stuff. Weekly Wipe can look at the bigger picture while TDS can give more details.

Daily Show and the Colbert Report are funny, but not that intelligent or good examples of news analysis shows.

all of the 'wipes are great, tho my favorite is probably gameswipe. brooker is a clever, funny dude in general

i think the crowning moment is definitely if pens got hot (which is how tv ruined your life but w/e)

Oh god, some of the stuff in "How TV ruined your life" actually gave me nightmares for a while. Guess the show's title is not joking. (Also, I was previously interested in watching Messiah. After that show? No longer!)

He's the guy who did a piece on the news coverage of school shootings, isn't he? I've always liked that piece.

Another person in this thread mentioned John Oliver, and I think there's a definite difference between Brooker/Oliver and Stewart/Colbert. The Daily Show and The Colbert Report cover news, but they're entertainment first, information second. Brooker and Oliver favour an approach that puts the main focus on the information being delivered, but peppers it with enough jokes to keep things fun and interesting.

Also Daily/Colbert are (or were, in Colbert's case) on 4 consecutive days a week, which calls for more promptly topical bits and less time to react to events / writes jokes, etc.

Text: I think this show does a better job of dissecting the news and media than the Daily Show or the Colbert Report combined.

I just wish they had more episodes per season.
