Do you want your non-canon ships to become canon?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-23 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Would you like the things you ship to become canon or do you prefer it doesn't? For the first time I'm shipping something that's looking more and more like it will eventually become canon and I'm not sure how I feel about it. On the one hand it's pretty cool but I'd almost rather it stay subtext forever than 'happy for a few episodes, then cheating and drama and the inevitable horrible breakup and then they quit speaking'.

What about you guys?

Canon can be a touchy subject. I have plenty of ships that aren't canon, or were only sorta implied I guess (Dark Heart and Christy holding hands at the end of the movie, Hey Arnold's creator stating Arnold does love Helga/they eventually get married in the future and have a family, etc)

I prefer canon because, well, it gives you shippy things to watch/read, ya know?

Man, I actually hate Helga/Arnold. Sorry, world. I just think it's awful.

Did he really?! Holy shit, learning this is the highlight of my week!

I don't. Because it seems whenever they become canon the show becomes terrible.

I usually ship non-canon and I want them to stay that way. The few times I've shipped canon, I always end up hating *something* the writers do that messes it up. I'd rather avoid that.

Depends on the ship? A lot less so than I used to. There are still some ships I want to be canon. Definitely not my creepy ships, though. Perfectly fine with those staying fanon.

I'm on this ship—the good ship 'Problematic'.

Yes, I'm kidding...mostly.

It depends on the canon, TBH. Certain shows I'm all about it and others not so much. Revenge, I just love all the couples both canon and non-canon. Others I like having subtext for longer.

Eh, I dunno. I find I tend to gravitate toward canon ships and/or ships that are destined to become canon, so it's usually a moot point. But the times when I have shipped things that are very much non-canon, I haven't been overly attached to the idea of them becoming canon.

And, honestly, most media doesn't handle established relationships very well. I sometimes wish I had more No Way This is Ever Gonna be Canon-type ships just so that I wouldn't ever have to deal with the (usually) inevitable disappointment.

Depends on the ship. But I think I'll always prefer my ship becoming canon at the end of the book/movie/game/etc. so that the writer(s) don't have a lot of opportunity to mess it up.

I think that's my preference, too. I want (most of) my ships to become canon eventually but if they don't get together until the end then the writers can't mess it up.

Most of them have, but that wasn't always a good thing.

I'm definitely a canon shipper though, so generally I just go with it.

I guess so. All of my het ships have gone canon and I loved 4/5 of them so I'd like it if my slash & femslash ships went canon but I get the trepidation about it.

generally I prefer either non-canon ships or ships that become canon at like the very end of the show/whatever (Korra/Asami for example. I know there are numerous others, but that's the freshest one in my mind). I know that if it were canon and had a chance to actually play out then I'd probably be disappointed in some way

I like how Stargate SG-1 did it; they had lots of shiptease and alternate reality marriages and time travel re-dos and robot duplicates, so you could SEE your ship happening on screen (ok mostly if your ship was Sam/Jack) and have some great stuff to draw on, but it wasn't canon so you could handwave it if you wished and there wasn't a chance for the creators to fuck it up--I don't feel like romance ruins series, but I do feel like it's one of the easiest things to misstep on!

I dunno. Once it's canon I tend to not care... but at the same time I want them to be canon.

Maybe. I don't genuinely believe Stucky will but it would be awesomely cool - and I believe MCU writers could pull it off.

But for less juggernaut- ships, it's even more interesting, because evn if the canon is not exactly as you'd like, the sheer fact of it being canon will mean more generation of art and fic.

hell no, not unless at the very end of the canon. i'm a soap opera fan who has sat through many an OTP being ruined once they became canon.

Yes and no.

But my 'no' reason is slightly unique in the sense that all my canon ships end tragically with either death for one (or both!) party or eternal separation. Anytime I'm shipping two characters and they actually manage to get together, I whisper in horror, "They're doomed."

Some of them yeah, I do a little(although I might not think they actually have a chance). But not all of them. Certainly not my messed up/creepy ships, those can stay well in the realm of fanfic for me.

The ones that are in some way fucked up? No. But the ones where they're close in age, have no creepy power imbalances, aren't related, don't hate each other, and have compatible personalities...sure.

I'd love for my OTP to become canon, mainly because for that to happen would require that one of the characters come back from the dead.

Given that most of my ships are slash? This is kind of a moot point. Although, it would be kinda awesome to see the shitstorm that would happen, esp with some of the het shippers in a couple of my fandoms. But on the other hand I don't think I'd trust the writers of most of my shows to not screw up a bi/gay couple. So overall, I'd go with no for most of my ships.

Hah, as it happens my answer to this was on a secret I submitted earlier this week! (Should be in next week's batch.)

Tl;dr answer: HELL NO.
