Exactly

it's honestly to the point where sometimes you wonder if people read the same books

[personal profile] loracarol 2015-01-24 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, this, seriously. I mean, where was Draco ever truly brave in the books? Even his act of "Not killing Dumbledore" was because he was afraid.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-24 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Once. And that's it.
loracarol: (why hello there ^_~)

[personal profile] loracarol 2015-01-24 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Really? When was that?

...Not trying to be sarcastic, I genuinely can't remember. ^^;

When he didn't out Harry despite knowing it was him in Malfoy manor, I imagine.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-24 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Only he outed Ron and Hermione almost immediately though, I mean it's not bravery when you instantly backpeddle.

That could be it, though I'll admit to agreeing with the anon that it doesn't seem very brave to me.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-24 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, we see this world and all the people in it through Harry's eyes, who's not exactly an unbiased narrator.

Not that Draco doesn't come off as a complete spineless prick, but that doesn't mean there's a lot more to him we aren't seeing, or instances that seem cowardly that may have different consequences for Draco.

He's presented as very two-dimensional, so I feel like reading him for exactly what he's presented as is...idk, lazy? That's why I like reading fic involving him; no two are alike, and they're often very interesting with how they parse his inner workings.

That's fair, and I definitely agree that we see the world through Harry's eyes.

At the same time, though, there's only so much you can do to redeem Draco by re-evaluating the story. And I guess I just think that to get to the point where he's a decent, brave person, you need to pretty much throw out the entire framework of the story as told by Harry. There's just no way to get there without completely throwing the whole story overboard.

I can agree with the idea that Draco is a much more interesting spineless prick than we see. And if someone is looking to do a character study with that in mind, I can appreciate that. But - and this is just my take - you have to go a real long way until you get to a place where I actually like his character.

Even in Jo's really lengthy extended info she released about him, he still comes across as a spineless prick tbh.

People think Draco was brave? I mean, I agree with you, it's just not something that ever stood out to me about the Draco in Leather Pants thing.

[personal profile] loracarol 2015-01-24 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Not alone in such a way that it would be his defining leather-pantsed attribute, but with the "dark lonely tortured hero" package comes bravery in many cases.

...I hope that sentence makes sense. D:

I just realized why fanon Draco irritates me, he's interpreted as a blonde Sasuke!

...Basically, yes.

I think if you'd just read the first 3ish books you could believe that Malfoy had the potential to be like fanon Draco and we as readers just hadn't got to see his personal side. But as the series went on it became very apparent that Malfoy was not like fanon Draco.

[personal profile] loracarol 2015-01-24 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
I can see that. Wasn't there a hiatus between the third and fourth books? /didn't actually read the books until the fifth one came out.

There was a 3 year wait for OotP, when before that a new book had been released every year. It was actually a pretty amazing time to be in fandom. Creativity exploded.

[personal profile] loracarol 2015-01-24 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
I see. Like I said, I didn't actually read the books until the fifth one came out (and my Aunt and Uncle gave me and my bros a full set, before that my Mum hadn't wanted us to read them, so we didn't have them in the house, and then Christmas came, lol, and she didn't fight it), so I didn't realize how much time had passed. O_O

I'm glad you got them in the end!
loracarol: (to the front to the front)

[personal profile] loracarol 2015-01-24 07:48 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. :)

Like, my Mum had some issues with it, but she was waffling on them, you know? And then she asked my friend's mom about them (because my friend's mom was also Christian, but she had let her children read them), and her mom said it would be a bad idea.

...I think my mom must have realized that this lady's reasons were bs, though, because honestly she could have taken the books away if she really still didn't want us reading them, I think.

Tbh Draco being a coward is the thing that I like the most about him and I wish we get to see a more personal side of him. Lonely tortured heroes are a dime a dozen, a story about a true coward who gets in over his head then struggle to realize his own shortcoming and redeeming himself is one I would like to see.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-24 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
For me the 'redeeming himself' part of that story has to happen if it's supposed to hold any interest, and Draco just...never does this. Even in JKR's added backstory info for him there's nothing about how he ever did anything to make up for being such a cowardly little shit and tbh, I can see why Snape at least would have the edge on him with this, because as awful a human being as Snape was his arc was about trying to make up for his worst mistakes. Idk if fanon Draco is better or worse with this. I can't be bothered to read every story, but the few I've seen start with the premise that Draco was never a coward to start with, and 1) lmao, 2) zzzzzz
