Exactly

it's honestly to the point where sometimes you wonder if people read the same books

Yep, this, seriously. I mean, where was Draco ever truly brave in the books? Even his act of "Not killing Dumbledore" was because he was afraid.

Once. And that's it.

Really? When was that?

...Not trying to be sarcastic, I genuinely can't remember. ^^;

When he didn't out Harry despite knowing it was him in Malfoy manor, I imagine.

Only he outed Ron and Hermione almost immediately though, I mean it's not bravery when you instantly backpeddle.

I'm not defending him, just saying I think that's what anon was referring to.

That could be it, though I'll admit to agreeing with the anon that it doesn't seem very brave to me.

To be fair, we see this world and all the people in it through Harry's eyes, who's not exactly an unbiased narrator.

Not that Draco doesn't come off as a complete spineless prick, but that doesn't mean there's a lot more to him we aren't seeing, or instances that seem cowardly that may have different consequences for Draco.

He's presented as very two-dimensional, so I feel like reading him for exactly what he's presented as is...idk, lazy? That's why I like reading fic involving him; no two are alike, and they're often very interesting with how they parse his inner workings.

That's fair, and I definitely agree that we see the world through Harry's eyes.

At the same time, though, there's only so much you can do to redeem Draco by re-evaluating the story. And I guess I just think that to get to the point where he's a decent, brave person, you need to pretty much throw out the entire framework of the story as told by Harry. There's just no way to get there without completely throwing the whole story overboard.

I can agree with the idea that Draco is a much more interesting spineless prick than we see. And if someone is looking to do a character study with that in mind, I can appreciate that. But - and this is just my take - you have to go a real long way until you get to a place where I actually like his character.

Even in Jo's really lengthy extended info she released about him, he still comes across as a spineless prick tbh.
