But it's possible to have OTPs without the craziness?

I mean, I have characters I would never ship with any other character, but I''m pretty ok accepting: 1) it's not canon 2) other people may like one or the other with someone else. And most people I know who have OTPs is the same.

The "interrogating the text form the wrong perspective" is just one (not as small as I would like to believe) loud group.

Basically this. ou can ship a couple passionally, without analyzing ever canon scene id their hands move half an inch closer, and see this as proof that they're coded as lovers or whatever bullshit.

You and I, we think alike.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-29 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Wait. I don't get this. Are you criticizing anyone who has an OTP that isn't canon, or are you just criticizing people who think their non-canon OTPs have reams of textual support and are truly canon?

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-01-29 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
More the second, or more specifically, the people whose enjoyment of a series hinges on their OTP becoming canon and will legit criticize the creators of the series for getting it wrong if it doesn't work out. So, the fans that take the "OT" part of OTP literally.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-01-29 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I definitely find that annoying. But I think if you don't know the person well enough there's a fine line between those to take it seriously and get angry over it. And the people who kind of just get enthusiastic about the little things they have to work with. Because at some points they'll say the same things, "omg did you see how A was the one who went to visit B when she needed help? totes canon you guys, it was meant to be" but I don't mind those people.

While I agree the second group can be hella annoying, there are also instances where it's kind of true? Hello HIMYM ending?
It really depends on more than one thing and is not black and white.

(For example, I always shipped the ships named in the secret and I would have enjoyed them more than the endgame couples, but it was really weird to me to meet the fandom (as a non-English speaking person I was late) and suddenly I'm crazy and delusional for it?)

OTP is a pretty relaxed term these days, honestly. I have so many friends who refer to multiple ships in one series (some canon and some non-canon, all often involving the same handful of characters mixed around like middle aged suburbanites at a key party) as their OTP. It's become just a term for "a thing that I ship really hard."

I will go down with this ship
And I won't close my eyes and surrender
There'll be no white flag upon my door
Korra's straight, and always will be...

OMG, keep this away from tumblr, the will stone you to death.

Pfft. Pains on tumblr will stone you for anything. The only trolling I've got thus far is from that guy who took great offense at me mocking Foreskin Man. Can't question that dude's priorities.

I would say just let people have their fun but then I remembered how obnoxious harmonians can be.

Text: I’ll never understand the whole fanon OTP phenomenon. I mean, I understand having your favorites, but the “interrogating the text from the wrong perspective” craziness of your Zutarans or Harmonians just blows my mind.

“NoTPs” I understand just fine, though. Some pairings just hit all the squicks. I’m looking at you, Marty/Doc Brown.

I usually stay as far away from shipping in fandom as I can. I mean there are ships that I like, but when people get into serious arguments about it I just want nothing to do with it (debating it is fine but I mean the serious "I will hate you if you talk badly about my ship" type of arguments...)

But then we wouldn't have such masterpieces like Emerson of Mugglenet And His Harmonian Slaves.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-29 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
I remember that. That was a good time.

I was never active in HP fandom, but sometimes I miss it, just because all the weirdness in it would trickle out into other places and it was so bizarre and entertaining.

You know...some people actually have a sense of humor about it and don't take it too seriously. Not everyone, but most people are just having fun with an idea and are running with it for shits and giggles.

You can have OTPs without being batshit about it.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-29 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think you need to have an otp to be an obnoxious and annoying fan. There are many varieties of annoying fans in fandom. The extreme otp-ers are just one variety.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Not gonna lie, I don't ship it and but Marty and the Doc meant a lot to me when I was young. Like, I don't want to think about how much it meant to me. I don't want to look too closely at the special way that relationship made me feel and ALL THE FEELINGS it gave me. I would've been shocked at the idea of shipping now, and I'd prefer to keep that original innocence. But...yeah. I probably shipped it somewhere inside Kid Me.

I just want to express my appreciation for you quoting 'interrogating the text from the wrong perspective'. It's been a while.
