(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 01:00 am (UTC)(link)I've only found the anti-queer!Dean fans to be obnoxious, tbh. I'm not in fandom (though occasionally participate in casual discussions, as I used to watch the series). They seem to pop up the most on non SPN corners of the internet, ranting about how Dean is totally straight for whatever reason. I've never run into this mysterious shipper that insists Dean is gay in canon and anyone who says otherwise is a bigot or whatever.
I stopped watching many seasons ago, but I wouldn't consider a character straight unless in canon (not outside sources, be it actors or directors or writers) the character is clearly established to be completely, without any possibility for any exception ever, absolutely heterosexual. Because characters are rarely established that way, I figure any character very well could be bisexual, even just a bit, even just under the right particular circumstance (because frankly, that's realistic to a huge number of people).
More than that, who the fuck cares what is "canon" anyway? Should people only be allowed to have head!canons or interests in fic, etc. that are completely compatible with canon? I mean, that'd throw any sort of AU out the window.
So I guess I don't get the smug attitudes from the fans that seem so intent on knocking queer headcanons. (and I'm gay, since we're all sharing)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 01:30 am (UTC)(link)it's obnoxious when people knock your head!canon, whether it's straight Dean or bi Dean or anything. I sincerely doubt either side on this is more or less rabid than the other.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 01:27 am (UTC)(link)I guess I could see it being bothersome if a particular headcanon (like Bi Dean) is extremely pervasive and someone just wants to read about Straight Dean, but shit, if you need Straight Dean that badly you can just watch the show. This kind of fan clearly already feels fairly smug in their conviction that, no matter what the rabid fangirls say, he's canonically straight, so they can't be worried about being brainwashed by the SJW hivemind. From the way some people talk, you'd think that they reenact the ending of Invasion of the Body Snatchers every time they let slip that they think Dean is straight.
(And I know this is anecdata and therefore holds no water, but FWIW I get way more people reblogging my posts on Tumblr to add things like "isn't [character] straight..." when I talk about an M/M or (more frequently) F/F ship involving a character who's canonically straight or has no canonical sexuality but is assumed to be straight. YMMV depending on fandom.)
