I don't usually blame PCness for things I don't like, but in this case I really think FW died because of the advance of SJ(W)s. If you look back at some of the greatest wanks (like Bartending in the Dark, or His Wife? A Horse, but also stuff like Thanfiction/Andy Blake) none of those would get posted to the main comm anymore. Maybe unfunny_business, but even that seems dead these days.

Which leaves stuff like CC and MsScribe, but I feel like fandom is too widespread these days to get the same kind of following wankers like that had.

It's a real pity, FW was great to catch up on drama happening in other fandoms. :(

Can you imagine how later FW would have reacted to some of the Harmonian's antics? Instead of laughing at the ridiculousness of it, there probably would have been a lot of unfunny raging.

I was under the impression it was because so much of fandom moved to Tumblr. This isn't a "Tumblr sux and ruined fandom!!!" comment, either. It's more that the formatting doesn't lend itself to chronicling the glorious wank the way LJ and DW style posts and threads do. So you can find one person wanking, but it's way harder to track the full story. Plus it's way harder to ensure everyone being mocked is 18+.

The SJW stuff might not have helped, idk. But it seems like FW declined at the same time as fans began migrating. I'd say move FW to Tumblr too, but like 75% of the fun for me was reading the wonderfully funny comments.

I agree that probably had a lot to do with it. I kept checking sf_d long after I should have stopped and the posts about tumblr that popped up later seemed harder to follow. Instead of linking to a post with all the comments underneath, there'd be a post and then here's a new link to a later part of the argument because it all the reblogs inside reblogs get hard to read, oh and there's some funny replies but you have to dig through 150 "____ liked this post" in order to see them.

That and fandom culture has moved away from "Look at this! Isn't it funny?" and toward "Look at this! Isn't it terrible?" Spreading these things around is less like sharing a joke and more like PSAs about people to avoid. Which goes back to what hwc said about "PCness" but I think people like MRAs can be basically the same about being motivated by a sense of righteousness rather than the lulz.

I think the FW decline started quite a bit before tumblr started getting big though.

Oh, I definitely agree that the move to tumblr hurt FW as well. I actually deleted a line in my original comment because I thought if I put blame both on SJWs and tumblr I'd come off as one of the anti-PC crowd. :P

I haven't been on fw_r in ages, but when I still checked it most reports about stuff going on on tumblr had someone question the ages of the participants. It's just a lot harder to check on tumblr, and the reblogging style doesn't lend itself to wank reports.
