My problem with this is twofold. First, I think assimilation is a complex process that takes time, sometimes lots of time, and that's okay. Second - and this is specific to America and also some hippy bullshit but whatever - the thing about America is that it's a culture that's in a lot of ways made up of waves of people assimilating but also changing the culture around them. So I have a problem with the idea that total assimilation is something that America can demand, because that's not what America is to me. The whole concept of American culture, the thing that you're trying to assimilate to, is itself a complex thing formed by all kinds of compromises between different groups, out of the idea that political tolerance and different groups of people getting along is a good thing. So how can you demand that someone wholly change?

I don't know, that's just how I feel about it I guess.

Just don't throw a fit because the new culture is different than your old one. And that people here, who are unfamiliar with your culture, might view it with caution.

Like my dad, for example, grew up in a country where you can bargain for almost anything. Yet he constantly complains to the workers at the grocery store about prices here in the US. He's gotten better in recent years, but I don't think those people are wrong to get pissed at my dad. They're just minimum wage workers and have no control over the price. They CAN'T bargain with him and he's trying to impose his values on the US. And if people get upset with him, then it's HIS fault.

Like I said, he's gotten better. But I don't feel he's in the right in this case.

That's fair. I just get a little weirded out when people talk about American culture like some unchanging monolith, I guess
