UGH.

Worst place I have ever lived. Nothing to do, always hot and dusty, laughable night life scene, terrible food... And a whole lot of homophobia.

Sorry, but after living there for 4 months you couldn't convince me to go back even if you were paying me top dollar.

Harsh, but I do see this a lot from folk passing through or on contracting work, especially if you're coming in from elsewhere with livelier events and more openly supported queer communities to compare it to. Can't say I see the rampant homophobia you would encounter in smaller towns with smaller populations, but I am in a bit of an echo chamber of positive queer support since volunteering and working with LGBT groups and non-profits.

The transphobia is definitely present though. Small improvements over the years, but it's still shit to stand out (one of the bigger reasons schools need gsa).

Compared to other places it was staggering. And I lived in Edmonton proper, not a town outside it. I was only a ten minute LRT ride into the city.

I don't know, it might have changed in the seven or so years since I left but it sure wasn't an inspiring or friendly place while I lived there.

What brought you here if you don't mind my asking? Outside of job/school-specific reasons, just here temporarily as a long pit stop, or having lived here before, I always get boggled by folk who would have Edmonton as their first choice. It's the sort of city you move out of if you're not tied down. As someone who does love/hate the city, I know I'm not going to stay once I have the money to leave.

I'm glad you didn't stay though, because that's a definite deal breaker!

My partner's dad's side of the family is from there, and one summer she was sent there on a co-op term for university... way back during her undergrad. Well, her grandparents got to talking with me and mentioned that there was a lot of work and they'd be willing to put me up with room and board. It was a dry summer for work in BC so I figured what the hell; two birds with one stone, meet the family and make some good cash.

Won't be making that kind of mistake again. To be fair, her folks were very nice people, it was just the rest of the experience that was bad.
