Re: how liberal is fs?

Not as liberal as my friends, that's for sure. I don't think GMOs are evil, I don't feel like war is always a terrible or avoidable thing (when it's a consequence of fatally differing philosophy rather than a resource bid), and I'm pretty into firearms.

But I'm very far from conservative as well being a queer, pro-choice, feminist, socialist, environmentally conscious sort who understands that climate change isn't a lie and is really a scientist at heart.

I mostly fit in with my colleagues in science and social science more than I do with my activist humanities friends.

"I don't think GMOs are evil"

Thank you.

Dear god does the hysteria over GMOs kill me.

The PRACTICES by Monsanto and such can definitely be abusive. But the actual SCIENCE is fine.

The biggest problem is the decreasing seed diversity. But that's not specifically a GMO issue.

Yes, that's specifically a Monsanto issue. And I mean... what a surprise, right. Giant global monopoly has evil business practices? Say it ain't so!

For the record, I'm pretty against big business as well, and therefore refuse to shop at Wal-Mart and other huge lot stores or nationwide supermarket chains or buy anything new that I can't get second hand (at a similar quality standard).

I don't even go to chain restaurants. That's my personal activism right there.

I wish there was more government/university sponsored GMO research that didn't dovetail with/suck the dick of big businesses. Like, not-for-profit, non proprietary GMOs. And engineering crops to take massive doses of herbicides without keeling over or produce their own pesticides--maybe if those herbicides weren't carcinogens and those pesticides didn't kill off pollinating insects, I'd be less creeped out. Basically, I'm pro-GMO while being anti Monsanto/Bayer et alm which in practice means I'm anti GMO.

So in other words, a liberal scientist.

I'll drink to that.

(I really don't get the anti-GMO thing...at all)
