Immunization records?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-03 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I was a badly immunocompromised premature baby, and around the time I was born, some other poor kid in the same town had a bad reaction to the whooping cough vaccine and it, to quote my mom, "fried his brains." Plus my parents were still doing the hippie thing--brown rice, non-fluoride toothpaste, solar panels, etc, etc, although this was pre Lancet study idiocy. So I didn't get vaccinated for whooping cough, and all my school vaccination records consist of the word EXEMPT. But I did get some vaccinations, I just don't have any record of which ones.

I finally have my own health insurance and I want to get vaccinated for all the common stuff I can, since I don't know which ones I missed and there's been a case of measles at my job and whooping cough's on the rise here. I don't want to kill some little kid whose parents didn't get them vaccinated or someone undergoing chemo.

So are there aren't any vaccinations that are dangerous to get more than once? (Googling "vaccine risk" is an exercise in frustration because ffs I'm not interested in fear-mongering bullshit.) And yeah, I'll ask my primary care doctor as soon as I'm assigned one, I'm just curious.

Honestly, I would just talk to a doctor about this. I know what I'm saying isn't helpful, but I doubt anyone here is really qualified to give you a good answer.

At best, we'll be slightly better at using the googles.

I'm not a doctor, but if there were concerns about "overvaccinating", your doctor would check your titres. Basically, they draw some blood, and test it for the antibodies for whatever you want to be vaccinated for. If you have enough antibodies in your blood, you're already immune and they don't need to vaccinate.

This, exactly.

Not really, no. And even the ones that are wouldn't still apply this many years later. Just assume you should get everything. Hell, tell the people giving you the shots this, it's their job to know this shit.

No. It's standard to bundle measles, mumps and rubella together as one shot for babies, for example. But honestly, just talk to your doctor about this, not the internet. Chances are he/she's had cases where adults either didn't get vaccinated for whatever reason, or who need booster shots. They'll handle it for you, no problem.

The only one I can think of is tetanus, and my evidence for that is entirely anecdotal. I work in a clinical lab so my work provides a lot of vaccinations. I got sent down to occupational health for a booster and the nurse practitioner decided not to give me the tetanus one because I didn't know when I'd last had it (only that I knew I'd had it some point in the past).

But I don't remember why she wasn't happy about having too much of that in my system so it could be a complete non issue for you. Definitely check with a doctor.
